Zanz Kant Danz
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind

Out in the street the crowd is gatherin'
Pushed down by the heat of the building, they're wantin' to dance
Makin' their way up the street, a boy with a pig and a radio
Little Billy can work on the crowd, put 'em into a trance
For the little pig Vanz

Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind

You're watchin' 'em dance, not a care in the world
So Billy and Vanz get busy, they're makin' their move
The little pig knows what to do
He's silent and quick, just like Oliver Twist
Before it's over, your pocket is clean
A four-legged thief paid a visit on you

Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind

Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind

Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind
Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind

Vanz can't dance, but he'll steal your money
Watch him or he'll rob you blind

Overall Meaning

"Vanz Kant Danz" is a cautionary tale about a man who is incapable of dancing but excels at stealing people's money. The chorus of the song repeats the warning to "watch him or he'll rob you blind" and sets the stage for the story that follows. The first verse describes a scene where a crowd has gathered outside a building, eager to dance. Little Billy arrives with a pig and a radio and is able to get the crowd into a trance. Unbeknownst to them, however, Billy and Vanz are using the distraction to steal their money, with the pig acting as the perfect accomplice.

The second verse is a warning to listeners to be careful because they too could fall victim to Vanz's thievery. The lyrics describe how Vanz, with the help of the silent and quick little pig, can quickly pick a pocket clean before anyone even realizes what has happened. The song ends with the chorus repeating the warning to watch out for Vanz and his thieving ways.

Overall, the song is a commentary on the ease with which people can be taken advantage of and robbed blind, often without even realizing it.

Saul Zaentz joined Fantasy Records in '55 and bought the label in '67 from the Weiss brothers. Fantasy Records owned the publishing and distribution rights to the music of Creedence Clearwater Revival where John Fogerty was the principal writer, guitarist, and vocalist. John signed away even more than the original contract stipulated to get out from under Saul. Bad investments by Zaentz and Fantasy Records cost CCR millions. In the 1980s, Zaentz sued Fogerty claiming plagiarism from Fogerty's own music asking for $140 million in damages. He lost in (Fantasy v. Fogerty.). John countersued for his attorney's fees and won in a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. "Zanz Can't Dance" and "Mr. Greed" from the "Centerfield" album describe Fogerty's true feelings. Fogerty originally called Zaentz by his real name (Zanz.) After a defamation lawsuit, Warner Bros. and John Fogerty agreed to change the title to "Vanz Kant Danz."

Word is that when Saul Zaentz died at 92 he didn't take a cent with him.

If you own an original Centerfield album where Fogerty calls Zaentz by his real name, hang onto it. I had one but lost it in my first divorce.

I was living in Canada at the time, and read in 'Rolling Stone' that Fogerty had been forced to change the title, and I think the lyrics to Vanz Kant Danz after about 100,000 copies had been sold. Quick trip to the local record shop, and they still had copies with Zanz Kant Danz. I still have my vinyl copy of the original. Love it.

The whole back story of the song aside, this is one of the more underrated tracks on the Centerfield album.  Should have been a much bigger hit than it was in my opinion.

Yea great song, I'm hoping to find a good instrumental version to work with

Stents is dead now. That pig is now burning.

Would have been a bigger single if Zaentz hadn't won the defamation lawsuit over the Zanz version of this song!

One of the most memorable music videos EVER! A perfect visual example of the definition of the word "cashectomy." Easily a much better song than the tiresome cliche of a title track ("Centerfield").
