After graduating with a degree in psychology, he began working as an adolescent drug counselor. It was around this time John started his first band. He is quick to admit that they were “quite possibly the worst band on the planet”. The band rehearsed for a year straight, only to play one show and break up. Not deterred, John decided to continue as a solo artist. In just a year's time he went from playing dive bars to some of the premier music venues in Orlando. John released his first EP "Anywhere But Here" in May 2006 and spent the next year and a half touring the east coast of the country. "It was by far one of the best experiences of my life, and I cannot wait to go out and do it again."
Following the tour, John went into the studio with acclaimed producer/engineer Keith Rose (Matchbox 20, Aerosmith) to record his sophomore EP "The Spaces Between". John describes the record as “my songs sounding the way I’ve always envisioned them, and then some”. The album was released in May 2008 to a sold out crowd; coming quite a long way from the open mic nights just a few years earlier. “It’s an amazing feeling when people sing-a-long with me at my shows, especially when I never expected some of the songs to make it out of my bedroom in the first place”.
Never Surrender

And my life passed before her feet
She dances where angels fall
And her future she's writing
But in my past I'm hiding out
There's no words; I've said it all
She won't believe me anyway
Sometimes it's easy to remember
You never surrender
I know
And I don't want to be the one
Staring at the loaded gun
As it's trembling in her hands
Since the day that she's been born
If I'm running out of time
I don't want to find out yet
And lately I don't understand
Who the hell she thinks I am
Treating me like I'm a goddamn superman
If I'm running out of time
I don't want to find out yet
Well the tables are turning
And her blue eyes are burning me
The new hole to see myself
And the night lights around me
As I walk these crowded streets
I realize there's no one else
No there's no one else
No one else
But sometimes I lie there and I wonder
If she makes it thunder when it rains
And sometimes it's easy to remember
You never surrender
And I know
I don't want to be the one
Staring at the loaded gun
As it's trembling in her hands
Since the day that she's been born
If I'm running out of time
I don't want to find out yet
And lately I don't understand
Who the hell she thinks I am
Treating me like I'm a goddamn superman
If I'm running out of time
I don't want to find out yet
But there ain't no use to be deceiving
She won't believe me anyway
And sometimes it's easy to remember
You never surrender
I don't want to be the one
Staring at the loaded gun
As it's trembling in her hands
Since the day that she's been born
If I'm running out of time
I don't want to find out yet
And lately I don't understand
Who the hell she thinks I am
Treating me like I'm a goddamn superman
If I'm running out of time
I don't want to find out yet
'Cause you never surrender
I know
In John Frank's song "Never Surrender," the lyrics convey a sense of introspection and emotional turmoil within a relationship. The singer reflects on the complexities of their connection with a partner who seems to be contemplating their future and evaluating their past. The line "She's thinking it over and my life passed before her feet" suggests a deep introspective process happening within the relationship, with the singer feeling exposed and vulnerable.
As the song progresses, there is a theme of grappling with past mistakes and secrets that the singer is concealing. The line "But in my past, I'm hiding out" alludes to a sense of guilt or regret that the singer carries. Despite expressing himself, he feels as though his words may fall on deaf ears, as reflected in the line "There's no words; I've said it all." This sense of futility in communication adds to the tension and uncertainty within the relationship.
The recurring motif of not wanting to face the consequences of his actions or the potential loss of the relationship is echoed throughout the song. The imagery of "staring at the loaded gun as it's trembling in her hands" symbolizes the imminent threat or danger looming over their relationship. The singer grapples with the fear of running out of time and facing the truth, as well as feeling misunderstood and pressure to live up to unrealistic expectations.
Ultimately, the song's chorus emphasizes the theme of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. The repeated assertion of "you never surrender" serves as a reminder to hold on and persevere through challenges and uncertainties in love. Despite the conflicts and doubts portrayed in the lyrics, there is a sense of hope and determination to weather the storm and continue fighting for the relationship. The emotional depth and introspective nature of the lyrics in "Never Surrender" capture the complexities and struggles of love and relationships.
