Good Morning Heartache
John Gabriel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good morning heartache, you old gloomy sight
Good morning heartache, thought we said goodbye last night
I turned and tossed until it seemed you had gone
But here you are with the dawn

Wish I'd forget you, but you're here to stay
It seems I met you when my love went away
Now everyday I start by saying to you
Good morning heartache, what's new

Stop haunting me now
Can't chase you no how
Just leave me alone
I've got those Monday blues
Straight through Sunday blues

Good morning heartache, here we go again
Good morning heartache, you're the one who knew me when
Might as well get used to you hanging around
Good morning heartache, sit down

Stop haunting me now
Can't chase you no how
Just leave me alone
I've got those Monday blues
Straight through Sunday blues

Good morning heartache, here we go again
Good morning heartache, you're the one who knew me when

Might as well get used to you hanging around
Good morning heartache, sit down

Overall Meaning

In John Gabriel's "Good Morning Heartache," the song's narrator wakes up to find that the feeling of heartbreak and sadness that they thought had left them the night before has returned once again. The opening lines set the mood with a sense of resignation - "Good morning heartache, you old gloomy sight / Good morning heartache, thought we said goodbye last night." The singer had hoped to leave their heartache behind and start anew, but instead, they find that it has come back to haunt them.

The lyrics go on to describe the singer's fruitless attempts to rid themselves of their heartache: "Wish I'd forget you, but you're here to stay / It seems I met you when my love went away." They recognize that their heartache is a constant presence in their life now, and they must confront it every day. The song's title, repeated throughout the song's chorus, takes on a sarcastic tone as the singer greets their heartache as if it were an unwelcome guest in their life. "Might as well get used to you hanging around / Good morning heartache, sit down."
