Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind
John Gallagher Jr. & Boys Lyrics

{Awful sweet to be a little butterfly
Just swinging over things and nothing deep inside
Nothing going, going wild in you, you know
You're slowing by the riverside, a-floating high and blue}

{Or maybe cool to be a little summer wind
Like once through everything and then away again
With the taste of dust in your mouth all day
But no need to know
Like sadness, you just sail away}
'Cuz you know
I don't do sadness
Not even a little bit
Just don't need it in my life

Don't want any part of it
I don't do sadness
Hey, I've done my time
Lookin' back on it all, man, it blows my mind

I don't do sadness
So been there
Don't do sadness
Just don't care

{Moritz Steephle

If only I knew
Then what's the use of looking?

I don't know

To my house and play pirates

Spring and summer
Every other day
Blue wind gets so sad
Blowing through the thick corn
Through the bales of hay
Through the open books on the grass
Spring and summer

Sure when its autumn
Wind always wants to
Creep up and haunt you
When silence got you
If it's heartache well, it's sorrow
Winter wind sings under cries

Spring and summer
Every other day
Blue wind gets so pained
Blowing through the thick corn
Through the bales of hay
Through the sudden drift of the rain
Spring and summer
{Actually I better go
Walk as far as my house with me
I wish I could
Then why don't you?

So maybe I should be some kind of laundry line
Hang their things on me, and I will swing 'em dry
You just wave in the sun through the afternoon and then see
They come to set you free beneath the rising moon

'Cuz you know
Spring and summer
I don't do sadness
Every other day
Not even a little bit
Blue wind gets so lost
Just don't need it in my life
Goin' through the big corn and bales of hay
Don't want any part of it

Spring and summer
I don't do sadness
Every other day
Hey, I've done my time
Blue wind gets so lost
Lookin' back on it all and it blows my mind
Goin' through the big corn and bales of hay

I don't do sadness
The wandering clouds of the dust
So been there, don't do sadness

Overall Meaning

The song "Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind" by Lauren Pritchard is a beautiful and poetic exploration of the human experience of emotion, as seen through the eyes of two characters - one who refuses to allow sadness into their life and another who embraces it. The first verse describes the desire to be carefree and unencumbered by the weight of deep emotion, like a butterfly or a summer wind. However, the second verse suggests that even those who try to avoid sadness cannot escape it entirely, as the blue wind of sadness blows through all seasons.

The chorus is a declaration of the first character's refusal to allow sadness to control their life. "I don't do sadness," they say, "not even a little bit." They have "done their time" with it and want no part of it going forward. The final verse, spoken by the second character, suggests a longing for freedom from sadness but an acceptance that it is a part of life that cannot be avoided.

Overall, "Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind" is a poignant and thought-provoking song about the complex relationship between humans and their emotions.

Line by Line Meaning

Awful sweet to be a little butterfly
It may seem lovely to live life without any deep thoughts or emotions, like a carefree butterfly.

Just swinging over things and nothing deep inside
The idea of gliding over circumstances without being bothered by anything too profound or meaningful may be appealing to some.

Nothing going, going wild in you, you know
When there are no internal struggles or wild emotions affecting you, life seems much simpler.

You're slowing by the riverside, a-floating high and blue
Peaceful moments in nature can help us relax and feel light and carefree.

Or maybe cool to be a little summer wind
Perhaps it's more desirable to be like the summer wind that blows through everything and then moves on without being weighed down by attachments or concerns.

Like once through everything and then away again
Being able to experience life fully but not get stuck anywhere or burdened by attachments may feel liberating for some.

With the taste of dust in your mouth all day
In such a transient lifestyle, one may have a constant feeling of emptiness or incompleteness.

But no need to know
There's no desire to understand or seek deeper meaning in life because it would slow down or burden one's free-spirited lifestyle.

Like sadness, you just sail away
Just as the wind blows away and doesn't hold onto anything, one can ignore or avoid any feelings of sadness they may experience.

'Cuz you know
This is a transitional phrase that suggests the shift to a different subject.

I don't do sadness
The singer is stating that they do not engage with feelings of sadness or allow it to control their life in any way.

Not even a little bit
The artist is emphasizing that they have no tolerance or room for any type of sadness, even small amounts.

Just don't need it in my life
For the singer, feeling melancholic serves no purpose or desire in their life, so they refuse to let it in.

Don't want any part of it
The singer is reiterating that they completely reject any notion of sadness in their life and refuse to engage with it.

Hey, I've done my time
The singer may be suggesting that they have already experienced their fair share of sadness and no longer wish to feel that way.

Lookin' back on it all, man, it blows my mind
Reflecting back on past experiences with sadness may still feel overwhelming or confusing for the artist.

Moritz Steephle
This line is the start of a new song section and character introduction in the musical.

Ilse, you frightened me
A character named Ilse is talking to Moritz and surprising him with her sudden presence.

What are you looking for?
Ilse is asking Moritz what he is searching for in his life, which may be a theme throughout the musical for various characters.

If only I knew
Moritz is admitting that he doesn't have all the answers to questions about his life, which may cause him anxiety and confusion.

Then what's the use of looking?
Ilse is suggesting that maybe, without a clear idea of his desires, Moritz shouldn't bother searching so intently for them.

I'm on the way home, want to come?
Ilse is inviting Moritz to join her on her way home, perhaps to distract him from his feelings of unease.

I don't know
Moritz is unsure about whether or not he wants to go with Ilse, indicating his indecisiveness.

God, you remember how we used to run back
Both Ilse and Moritz are reminded of happier times from their past and feel a sense of nostalgia.

To my house and play pirates
They have fond memories of childhood, where they could engage in imaginative play without any worries or sadness to bring them down.

Vend LeBergman, Melchior Gabor, you and I?
These are the names of characters from the same musical, hinting at the connected universe within the production.

Spring and summer
A new musical section begins, referring to the changing seasons and the various feelings and experiences associated with each one.

Every other day
As the seasons change, so do the artists' impressions of the world around them.

Blue wind gets so sad
The wind, a natural symbol of change and growth, takes on a melancholy feeling as the season shifts to autumn.

Blowing through the thick corn
The wind interacts with various natural elements, perhaps hinting at the cyclical nature of life - one season ends, another begins.

Through the bales of hay
Continued imagery of nature as the autumn changes to winter - the hay has been harvested and the fields are barren.

Through the open books on the grass
Books left outside during the fall may signify a changing of habits or routines as the year progresses.

Sure when its autumn
The artist is acknowledging that autumn is the time when the wind, and perhaps people's emotions, start to shift.

Wind always wants to
Personification of the wind emphasizes the idea that the natural world is interconnected with human feelings and actions.

Creep up and haunt you
Just as the wind gains a more melancholy feel as the year goes on, a similar feeling of dread may overcome people in the fall season.

When silence got you
This line is a bit unclear, but it may imply that people who are feeling overwhelmed with sadness try to find solace in silence or isolation.

If it's heartache well, it's sorrow
The singer is acknowledging various negative emotions that people may experience as the year draws to a close.

Winter wind sings under cries
The shift to winter brings even more somber feelings and symbolism - the songs of winter may only remind people of their sadness and pain.

So maybe I should be some kind of laundry line
The singer suggests that maybe they should be like a laundry line - detached, unfeeling, and simply passing through various changes.

Hang their things on me, and I will swing 'em dry
They are open to helping others who are going through difficult times, but only in a practical way - no deep emotional involvement or attachment.

You just wave in the sun through the afternoon and then see
This line is a bit unclear, but it may suggest that the artist is content to simply see others moving forward, without getting involved in their emotional journey.

They come to set you free beneath the rising moon
This line is also unclear, but it could suggest that others are able to move on from their sadness more easily, while the singer is still struggling to let go.

The wandering clouds of the dust
The singer is once again referencing the natural world and its connection to human emotions.

Goin' through the big corn and bales of hay
As the seasons change, so do the things that the wind interacts with - once again, emphasizing the cyclical nature of life.

Spring and summer
Returning to earlier themes of the musical, the artists are once again acknowledging the cyclical nature of time itself.

Blue wind gets so pained
The wind has now become more than just sad - it's outright pained by the changing seasons and their associated emotions.

Through the sudden drift of the rain
Continued imagery of nature and its ability to affect human emotions and feelings.

The preceding section repeats with slight variation.
Repitition restating the many ways the blue wind is affected by human emotions and the changing seasons.

Actually I better go
A sudden shift to a new scene or perspective within the musical, introducing a different character or event.

Walk as far as my house with me
One character is asking another to accompany them home as an act of companionship and shared experience.

I wish I could
The other character is expressing a desire for something - perhaps wanting to connect on a deeper emotional level with the first person.

Then why don't you?
The first character is urging the second to take action on their desires and make more meaningful connections with others.

Eighty lines of Virgils, sixteen equations, a paper on the hopsboard
The final line of the song suggests a reference to academic or intellectual life, juxtaposed against the emotional struggles and cyclical changes throughout the song.

Eu serei igual a borboleta azul
Tão leve contra o vento sem um norte ou sul
Nada dentro, nada forte e nada mau

Já provei e abusei, eu me lambuzei

Não tem tristeza, eu gastei
Da tristeza eu passei…

why don't more people appreciate this musical

Jacob Mccann

Spring Awakening is 10 years old. It was HUGE in 2006. It pretty much swept the Tonys(8 wins, 11 noms). Groff is still waiting for his tony though. Nominated for this and Hamilton... someone get that guy a Tony already!

idk at this point

+Jacob Mccann yeah my mom doesn't like musicals but she remembers seeing the Tony performance

chloe watson

yeee i know how popular it was, but it seems like one of those things everyone falls in love with and then forgets about completely. it could just be my experience, but i don't think it gets the recognition it deserves anymore.

chloe watson there was a revival last year, but other than that, SA is pretty much done for. Everyone's moved on because the show has been closed for seven or eight years, and there's nothing new coming soon with the show.

I love that listening to the soundtrack and actually watching the musical are such different and amazing experiences in their own way. Watching the musical is just so big and loud and thunderous and resonant, but then listening to the soundtrack is completely the opposite: it's such an intimate, close experience. And yet somehow, both ways the songs get all the way to your bones.

YES exactly

"For the love of God, all I had to do was say yes! ILSE? ILSE! So, what will I say? I’ll tell them all… the angels, I got drunk in the snow, and sang, and played pirates. Yes, I’ll tell them. I’m ready now. I’ll be an angel. Ten minutes ago you could see the entire horizon. Now, only sparks, see? shooting stars… So dark… so dark… so dark."
