Power
John Hall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just give me the warm power of the sun
Give me the steady flow of a waterfall
Give me the spirit of living things as they return to clay
Just give me the restless power of the wind
Give me the comforting glow of a wood fire
But won't you take all your atomic poison power away

Everybody needs some power I'm told
To shield them from the darkness and the cold
Some may seek a way to take control when it's bought and sold
I know that lives are at stake
Yours and mine of our descendants in time

There's so much to gain and so much to lose
Everyone of us has to choose

Overall Meaning

John Hall's song "Power" speaks of the importance of power in our lives and how it should come from natural sources instead of atomic energy. The singer requests for the warm power of the sun, the steady flow of a waterfall, and the spirit of living things as they return to clay. He also asks for the restless power of the wind and the comforting glow of a wood fire. These are all natural forms of power that are not only sustainable but also do not pose a threat to human lives and the environment.

The song goes on to highlight the fact that everyone needs power to shield themselves from the darkness and the cold. However, some people seek to take control of this power and turn it into a commodity that is bought and sold. The singer recognizes that our lives and the lives of our descendants are at risk here, and it is crucial to make the right choice. The chorus emphasizes the need to choose between gain and loss.

Overall, "Power" is a socially conscious and environmentally aware song that encourages people to think beyond just the present and make choices that will benefit future generations.

Thanks so much for posting this song. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of this album for years. Why oh why hasn't this album been re-released!!??? Every song on it is fantastic. What an un-celebrated artist he is. If anyone knows how to get a CD of this album that doesn't cost a hundred bucks, please tell.

This was not recorded in Japan at all, but, yes, it is too real here after more than 30 years now. When they had the Three Mile Island disaster in the U. S., John Hall put it damn right! So simple and straight... Please check out Jackson Browne's Before The Deluge, too.
