Although critically acclaimed, John Hammond has had only moderate commercial success. Nonetheless, he enjoys a strong fan base and has earned respect from the likes of John Lee Hooker, Roosevelt Sykes, Duane Allman, Robbie Robertson, and Charlie Musselwhite, all of whom have contributed their musical talents to Hammond's records. In addition, he is the only person who ever had Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix in his band at the same time, even if it was only for five days in the 1960s when Hammond played the Gaslight Café in New York. To his regret, they never recorded together.
John Hammond has had a longstanding friendship with songwriter Tom Waits, and has performed Waits' songs on occasion. In 2001, he released Wicked Grin, an album entirely of Tom Waits compositions. Waits himself provided guitar work and backing vocals as well as producing the project.
2. John Hammond was a old time banjo player from the 1920's. He recorded the bluegrass classic 'Little Birdie' in 1925.
Red Hot Kisses
John Hammond Lyrics

Ever since I kissed you darling, I never will forget
Lots of red hot kisses, I mean your red hot kisses
Your Red hot Kisses baby but, Lord you got such a cold cold heart
You took me for my money, and bought your clothes and shoes
Now you got another daddy, and I′ve really got the blues
Over your red hot kisses, I mean your red hot kisses
I thought you was an angel, but I saw in my dreams
Now I'm having nightmares darling, and I′m just about to scream
Over your red hot kisses, baby your red hot Kisses
Your red hot kisses baby but you, baby you got such a cold cold heart
I thought you was an angel, but I saw in my dreams
Now I'm having nightmares darling, and I'm just about to scream
Over your red hot kisses, baby your red hot kisses
Your red hot kisses
Your red hot kisses but darling, you got such a cold cold heart
The first verse of John Hammond's song Red Hot Kisses describes a moment of infatuation, but unfortunately, it doesn't last. He describes how the woman he fell in love with looked like an angel on the first day they met, and after sharing a kiss with her, he was hooked. Hammond uses the phrase "red hot kisses" to describe the passionate nature of their encounters. However, the chorus is where the tone changes. Hammond describes the woman's kiss as red hot, but laments that she has a "cold cold heart." This juxtaposition creates a sense of tragedy, as Hammond realizes that the passion he felt with this woman was all for naught.
The second verse reveals that the woman has taken advantage of Hammond. She has used his money to buy clothes and shoes, and has moved on to a new "daddy." Hammond realizes that he has been played for a fool and is deeply saddened by the outcome of their relationship. In the final verse, Hammond describes how his perception of the woman has shifted. He thought she was an angel, but now he only has nightmares about her red hot kisses, which he realizes were not an indication of her true feelings toward him. The song ends with another repetition of the chorus, highlighting the contrast between Hammond's initial passion and the heartlessness of the woman he loved.
