The Tide Is High
John Holt & The Paragons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The tide is high but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one

I'm not the kinda man who gives up just like that, no oh oh oh
It's not the things you do, that really hurts me bad
But it's the way you do the things, you do to me

I'm not the kinda man who gives up just like that no oh oh oh
The tide is high but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one
Number one, number one

Every man wants you to be his girl
But I'll wait my dear 'till it's my turn
I'm not the kinda man who gives up just like that, no oh oh oh

Every man wants you to be his girl
But I'll wait my dear 'till it's my turn
I'm not the kinda man who gives up just like that, no oh oh oh

The tide is high but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one
The tide is high but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one

The tide is high but I'm holding on
I'm gonna be your number one

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Holt & The Paragons's song "The Tide Is High" seem simple at first glance, but they actually convey a powerful message about love and perseverance. The singer of the song is facing a difficult situation – the "tide" (representing challenges in the relationship) is high – but despite this, they are determined to hold on and become their partner's "number one." The singer states that they are not the kind of person who gives up easily, indicating that they are willing to face the challenges head-on and work through them.

The song's message reminds us that relationships are not always easy, and sometimes we have to hold on tight and weather the storms. The lyrics also suggest that the difficulties in a relationship may not necessarily come from what the other person is doing, but rather from how they are doing it – emphasizing the importance of communication and treating each other with respect.

Overall, "The Tide Is High" is not just a catchy tune, but a thought-provoking song that tells a story of perseverance in the face of adversity.

Can we all take a minute and appreciate YouTube and the internet?
Imagine reading in the 1980s that Blondie's song was a cover from some Jamaican group in 1967. Imagine scouring record stores trying to find this. With no vintage record stores in your area, you'd have to call a radio station to request this song or order the album through the mail.
I found out two minutes ago Blondie's song was a cover and pulled this up, instantly and for free.

"Some Jamaican group"

@markyeeee

@@owenleal True., Paragons are pretty famous...but I think the comment was well intentioned

@GeeWhizzzz

Yes my exact recurring thoughts
The internet and the birth of Youtube
Found so many gems I hadn't heard in over 40 years
And new ones too. Still scouring / hunting.
Life is good.

@benjsmithproductions

@@markyeeee I'd argue in the grand scheme of popular music, the Paragons are indeed a pretty deep cut.

@markyeeee

@@benjsmithproductions I think the original comment was well intentioned but "some reggae band" sounds a little dismissive. If you are a reggae fan they are well known and well regarded. Granted they do not have world wide fame. I don't think we really disagree.
