John Kelly / Judge Jules / Seb Fontaine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Have mercy on me, O loving God
With your flowing compassion cleanse me
Wash me kindly and gently till I am returned
To the child I'm created to be

Create in me a clean heart, O God
cnd renew a right spirit within me
May I never doubt your spirit all about
cnd restore me into your joy

In my inmost heart, may your wisdom abound
Take away all the layers that hide me
cccept me with all that is broken within
May I sing your songs once again

Create in me a clean heart, O God
cnd renew a right spirit within me
May I never doubt your spirit all about
cnd restore me into your joy

I will lift my soul, for to you I'll sing praise
O God of my salvation
For the only sacrifice that you need
Is a heart that is willing to mend

Create in me a clean heart, O God
cnd renew a right spirit within me

May I never doubt your spirit all about
cnd restore me into your joy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Believe In Me" by John Kelly, Judge Jules, and Seb Fontaine convey a deeply introspective and spiritual message. The singer begins by imploring a merciful and loving God to have compassion on them and cleanse them. The imagery of being washed kindly and gently until they are returned to the innocence of a child signifies a desire for purity and renewal. This plea for spiritual purification sets the tone for the rest of the song, where the singer seeks a clean heart and a right spirit from God.

The theme of renewal and transformation continues as the lyrics call for a clean heart to be created by God and a right spirit to be renewed within the singer. The aspiration to never doubt the presence of God's spirit and to be restored into a state of joy speaks to a longing for spiritual guidance and comfort. The repetition of this plea emphasizes the earnest desire for inner cleansing and alignment with divine love and purpose.

The song delves deeper into the idea of inner transformation as the singer expresses a wish for divine wisdom to abound in their inmost heart. The removal of layers that hide the true self and the acceptance of all that is broken within reflect a journey towards self-acceptance and spiritual healing. The desire to sing God's songs once again symbolizes a return to a state of grace, harmony, and connection with the divine.

The final verses of the song express a commitment to praise and worship God, acknowledging Him as the source of salvation. The lyrics stress that the only sacrifice required by God is a willing heart that is open to healing and renewal. The overarching message of the song revolves around the theme of personal transformation, redemption, and the belief in the power of faith to guide one towards a place of inner peace and joy.

I was more into hardcore and then jungle in the 90s, but always enjoyed listening to John Kelly's sets. He would sometimes play the 2nd room of some of the jungle raves, and always delivered. His style was very uplifting and often incorporated elements of hardcore tracks as well. Definitely one of my favourite house DJs of the time, along with Tall Paul and Sarah Chapman

a few months before this mix was made john kelly busted my west coast cherry at a moon tribe past lone pine tree. unforgettable moment as the sun came up to hear him laying down west coast funky house and desert breaks. much different than the east coast at the time.
