Whiskey and Wimmen
John Lee Hooker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whiskey and wimmen almost wrecked my life
Whiskey and wimmen almost wrecked my life
Were'nt for whiskey and wimmin, I'd have money today

Nightlife, nightlife, nightlife
Ain't no good, ain't no good for me
I had a good start, but wimmen and whiskey tore it down
Whiskey and wimmen ain't no good for me
Whiskey and wimmen ain't no good, ain't no good for me

I had a lot of money and big fine car, but I lost everything I had
Aww I did

Overall Meaning

The song Whiskey and Wimmen by John Lee Hooker is a cautionary tale about the perils of living a wild and reckless life. The opening lines of the song, "Whiskey and wimmen almost wrecked my life," convey a sense of regret and longing for a life that could have been different had the singer not succumbed to the temptations of alcohol and women. The repetition of this line underscores the depth of the singer's remorse, as he acknowledges that his choices have led to his current state of poverty.

The next lines, "Were'nt for whiskey and wimmin, I'd have money today," suggest that the singer recognizes how his own actions have contributed to his financial troubles. However, this acknowledgement is immediately tempered by the refrain of "nightlife, nightlife, nightlife," which conveys a sense of the irresistible allure of a life of partying and excess. The singer knows that this lifestyle is not good for him, but he cannot help but be drawn to it.

The final verse reinforces the message of the song, as the singer laments that he had everything he could have wanted - money, a car, and presumably a successful career - but lost it all due to his own choices. The repetition of "whiskey and wimmen ain't no good for me" serves as a warning to others who might be tempted to follow the same path.

Overall, Whiskey and Wimmen is a powerful portrait of the dangers of indulging in vices to excess. It is a song that speaks to anyone who has ever made a bad decision and suffered the consequences.

"Whiskey and Women Almost Ruined My Life..." ain't that the truth! This song is the essence of the blues - sung by a true master. JLH was one of America's greatest musicians. I once had an opportunity to see JLH perform live at the Golden Bear in Berkeley in the early 1970s - I didn't take it and regret it to this very day. This man and his music are legendary. I miss you Johnny... RIP!
