Legend also played the piano on Lauryn Hill's 1998 song "Everything is Everything" and sang background vocals on Jay-Z's "Encore" and Alicia Keys' "You Don't Know My Name". Legend frequently cites gospel, R&B, and hip hop music as his main musical influences.
Legend released his critically acclaimed and Billboard Top Ten second album, Once Again, in October 2006. Produced by Raphael Saadiq, Kanye West and will.i.am, it is again a mixture of gospel and classic soul showcasing his extraordinary voice, particularly on "Show Me".

Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend combined the raw fervor of contemporaries Cody ChesnuTT and the burning precision of D'Angelo. Born John Stephens, Legend was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio, where he began singing gospel and playing piano at the tender age of five. Legend left Ohio at 16 to attend college in Philadelphia, and it was there that he first found a larger audience. Not yet out of his teens, Legend was tapped to play piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything" in 1998. After completing college, he moved to New York, where he began to build a loyal following playing in nightclubs and releasing CDs that he would sell at shows. He also became an in-demand session musician, playing and occasionally writing for a wide array of artists, including Alicia Keys, Twista, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West. It wasn't until West signed the young talent to his new label that he adopted the Legend name with 2004's Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory. Get Lifted, his first studio album, was released later in the year. On the strength of enduring single "Ordinary People," the album reached the Top Five of the Billboard 200. This led to three Grammy Awards: Best R&B Album, Best R&B Male Vocal Performance, and Best New Artist. Once Again, which peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and number one on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, followed in October 2006. Live from Philadelphia, sold exclusively at Target stores, was a successful stopgap release that predated October 2008's Evolver.
Baby It's Cold Outside
John Legend Lyrics

I've got to go away (but, I can call you a ride)
This evening has been (I'm so glad you that you dropped in)
So very nice (time spent with you is paradise)
My mom will start to worry (I'll call the car and tell him to hurry)
My daddy will be pacing the floor (wait, what are you still livin' home for?)
So, really, I'd better scurry (your driver, his name is Murray)
But maybe just a half a drink more (oh, we're both adults, so who's keepin' score)
If I have one more drink? (It's your body and your choice)
Ooh you really know how (your eyes are like starlight now)
To cast a spell (one look at you and then I fell)
I ought to say, "No, no, no, sir" (then you really ought to go, go, go)
At least I'm gonna say that I tried (well, Murray, he just pulled up outside)
I really can't stay
(I understand, baby)
Baby, it's cold outside
I simply should go (text me when you get home)
Oh, I'm supposed to say no (mm, I guess that's respectable)
This welcome has been (I feel lucky that you dropped in)
So nice and warm (but you better go before it storms)
My sister will be suspicious (well, gosh your lips look delicious)
My brother will be there at the door (oh, he loves my music, baby, I'm sure)
My gossipy neighbor's vicious (I'm a genie, tell me what your wish is)
But maybe just a cigarette more (oh, that's somethin' we should probably explore)
I've got to get home (oh, baby, I'm well aware)
Say, lend me a coat (oh, keep it girl, I don't care)
You've really been grand (I feel good to touch me hands)
Don't you see? (I want you to stay, it's not up to me)
There's bound to be talk tomorrow (well, they can talk, what do they know)
At least there will be plenty implied (oh, let their mind do this, and-)
Ma'am, I really can't stay
Baby, just go
It's cold, baby
It's cold, baby
But, ooh, I don't wanna go
It's cold outside
The lyrics to John Legend & Teyana Taylor's song "Cold" tell a story of two individuals who are engaged in a playful and flirtatious conversation about whether or not they should stay together for the night. The song borrows elements from the classic holiday tune, "Baby, It's Cold Outside," but takes on a modern twist with a more respectful and consensual tone.
The song opens with the female singer expressing her desire to leave, but the male singer suggests calling her a ride instead. He mentions how enjoyable their time together has been and tries to assure her that her parents won't worry about her leaving. The male singer also implies that they are both adults and can make their own decisions about having another drink. He compliments the female singer's beauty and refers to her eyes as "starlight."
As the conversation continues, the female singer mentions what others might think if she stays and how her sister and brother might react. The male singer reassures her by saying her lips look delicious and that her brother loves his music. He continues to flatter her by calling her a genie and expressing his desire for a cigarette, suggesting further exploration. However, the female singer insists on going home and asks for a coat. The male singer acknowledges that he wants her to stay, but ultimately respects her decision.
The song ends with a playful exchange where the male singer states that he can't stay, and the female singer tells him to leave, acknowledging that it is cold outside but expressing her reluctance to let him go.
Overall, the lyrics portray a lighthearted and charming interaction between two people who are considering spending the night together. The song highlights the importance of respecting boundaries and making consensual choices.

They always ask "where's Murray?" But never "How's Murray". If you're cold, he's cold. Let Murray in.

Ugg, he rewrote it to make it look like he wasnât forcing her to stay but the original song was written by a MARRIED COUPLE that sang it to their family every Christmas. It was an innocent song about a guy not wanting his date to leave because he really liked her and they were both flirting with each other. He wasnât holding her hostage or anythingđ¤Śââď¸ get it straight Johnđ
