Help
John Lenon & Paul Mccartney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Help, I need somebody
Help, not just anybody
Help, you know, I need someone
Help

(When)
When I was younger, so much younger than today (I never needed)
I never needed anybody's help in any way (now)
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured (and now I find)
Now I find, I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you, please, please help me?

(Now)
And now my life has changed in, oh, so many ways (my independence)
My independence seems to vanish in the haze (but)
But every now and then I feel so insecure (I know that I)
I know that I just need you like I've never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground
Won't you, please, please help me?

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way (now)
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured (and now I find)
Now I find, I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being 'round
Help me get my feet back on the ground

Won't you, please, please help me?
Help me, help me

Overall Meaning

In the song "Help" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the repeated plea for assistance reflects a deep sense of vulnerability and acknowledgment of one's need for support. The opening lines, "Help, I need somebody, Help, not just anybody," set the tone for the rest of the song, emphasizing the singer's desperation for help from another person. The repetition of the word "Help" highlights the urgent and earnest nature of the request, suggesting a sense of isolation and longing for connection.

The lyrics also explore themes of growing up and changing perspectives on independence and self-assurance. The lines "When I was younger, so much younger than today, I never needed anybody's help in any way" express a past sense of self-reliance and confidence. However, as the singer reflects on their current state, they admit to feeling less secure and more in need of assistance. This internal shift is captured in the line "Now I find, I've changed my mind, I've opened up the doors," indicating a newfound willingness to ask for help and rely on others.

Throughout the song, there is a sense of loneliness and emotional struggle that the singer is experiencing. The lines "Help me if you can, I'm feeling down, And I do appreciate you being 'round" convey a sense of gratitude for the presence of someone willing to lend a helping hand during difficult times. The singer acknowledges their vulnerability and realises that reaching out for help is essential in overcoming their feelings of insecurity and uncertainty.

The repetition of the chorus at the end of the song reinforces the message of seeking and accepting support from others. The final plea, "Help me if you can, I'm feeling down, And I do appreciate you being 'round, Help me get my feet back on the ground, Won't you, please, please help me?" encapsulates the deep yearning for assistance and connection, ultimately highlighting the universal need for human companionship and understanding. The song conveys a powerful message about the importance of reaching out for help when needed and the transformative impact of support from others in times of struggle.
