John Mayall is often referred to as the "Father of the British blues." His well-known band is still called John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. They started out in the late 1950s in England, using Chicago style blues as a starting basis for their sound, which has evolved from album to album. And while at one point John Mayall was playing a fairly jazzy sound, he has always come back to the blues.
One of the interesting features of the Bluesbreakers is that members have changed on a very regular basis, and many have gone on to well deserved fame and fortune with other bands and as solo acts. Past members include: Eric Clapton, and Jack Bruce, (also of Cream), Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, and Mick Taylor, (who went on to a five -year stint with the Stones.) The studio album recorded with Clapton, entitled John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, was recorded in 1966, and is widely considered to be one of the great classic blues albums on either side of the stormy Atlantic. Cream came round right after.
John Mayall stands out for several reasons - his standing up for the blues, while experimenting with different approaches, his ability to attract the best of musicians; and perhaps most notably his willingness to work with musicians who far outshine him in sheer ability. And he himself sounds very good!

My Pretty Girl
John Mayall Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My pretty girl lying on her furry bed
Pretty as the moonlight
I only want to treat her right
My pretty girl doing something to her hair
My pretty girl dressing up with special care
Pretty as the moonlight
My pretty girl making me feel her man
My pretty girl hugging me when she can
Pretty as the moonlight
I only want to treat her right
My pretty girl sleeping in the still of night
My pretty girl glowing in the candlelight
Pretty as the moonlight
I only want to treat her right
In "My Pretty Girl," John Mayall portrays a man who is deeply in love with his partner. He describes her beauty in great detail, as seen in the first verse where he speaks of her sitting in a room of red and lying on a furry bed. The use of the word "pretty" emphasizes the singer's adoration for his partner. He wants to treat her right and make her feel loved, as indicated in the second verse where he mentions her taking special care to dress up and do something to her hair. The singer feels like a man in her presence and enjoys her warm embraces, as expressed in the third verse.
The final verse is particularly poignant as it speaks of the peace and serenity that comes with having his partner close by. The image of a person glowing in candlelight suggests a comforting presence. The repetition of the phrase "pretty as the moonlight" throughout the song emphasizes the beauty and purity of the singer's love for his partner. The overall mood of the song is one of tenderness and endearment.
