She went away
She gone an left me
She gone to stay
But now she gone
An' I don't worry
'Cause I'm sittin' on top of the world
And worked all the fall
I had to take my Christmas
In my over-halls*
But now she's gone
An' I don't worry
Because I'm sittin' on top of the world
Goin' down to the freight yard
Just to meet a freight train
I'm gon' leave this town
Work has done gotten too hard
But now she's gone
And I don't worry
Because I'm sittin' on top of the world
One summer day
She went away
She gone an left me
She gone to stay
But now she gone
And I don't worry
Because I'm sittin' on top of the world
The lyrics of "On Top of the World" by John Mayall Ft. Eric Clapton tell the story of a man who has been left by a woman, but he is not saddened by it. The first verse describes how the woman left him on a summer day and how she went away to stay. Despite the pain of the separation, the man does not worry because he feels that he is on top of the world. The second verse explains how the man had to work hard all summer and fall, and even had to spend his Christmas in overalls. However, he is not worried about his past struggles because the woman is now gone.
In the third verse, the man seems to be preparing to move on from the town where he has been living. He plans to meet a freight train and leave the town behind because the work has become too hard for him. Yet again, he reiterates that he is not worried because the woman is gone and he is on top of the world. The fourth verse repeats the same lines as the first verse, emphasizing how the woman has left, but the man is not worried.
Overall, the lyrics of the song express a sense of freedom and liberation that the man feels now that he is no longer in the woman's company. The tune has a bluesy feel to it that complements the lyrics well.

One summer day
It all started on a summer day
She went away
My significant other left me
She gone an left me
She left without saying goodbye
She gone to stay
She's not coming back
But now she gone
She's no longer with me
An' I don't worry
But I'm not bothered by it anymore
Cause I'm sittin' on top of the world
Because I'm in a good place in my life right now
Works all the summer
I worked hard all summer
And worked all the fall
And I worked just as hard throughout the fall
I had to take my Christmas
I couldn't take a break for the holidays
In my over-halls*
I had to work through Christmas in my overalls
But now she's gone
But now she's no longer here
Goin' down to the freight yard
I'm going down to the freight yard
Just to meet a freight train
To catch a train out of town
I'm gon' leave this town
I'm leaving this place behind
Work has done gotten too hard
Work has become too difficult for me to handle
And I don't worry
But I'm not worried about it anymore
Because I'm sittin' on top of the world
Because I'm in a good place in my life right now
But now she gone
But she's still not with me
And I don't worry
But I'm still not worried about it
Because I'm sittin' on top of the world
Because my life is going well overall

WITHOUT A DOUBT, one of the BEST early Mayall compositions. The Chord structure appears in so many later rock songs; Clapton with that hqaunting 4 note break only highlights the songs charm and deftness. The guy who stated that this was the Mayall song he most frequently hummed is Right. I miss you Kathie.

It's on the 1993 sampler, "The Story of the White Blues", on the "Bluesbreaking!" JM&HBB rarities album, and some version or another is on the 40 anniversary deluxe edition of "Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton". There's also some very lame performance on a Live at the BBC release.
