Perfectly Lonely
John Mayer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Had a little love
But I spread it thin
Falling in her arms and out again
I made a bad name for my game 'round town
Tore out my heart and shut it down

Nothing to do
Nowhere to be
A simple little a kind of free
Nothing to do
No one but me
And that's all I need

I'm perfectly lonely
I'm perfectly lonely
I'm perfectly lonely
Yeah
Cause I don't belong to anyone
And nobody belongs to me

I see my friends around from time to time
When the ladies let us slip away
And when they ask me how I'm doing with mine
This is always what I say

Nothing to do
Nowhere to be
A simple little kind of free
Nothing to do
No one to be
Is it really hard to see?

I'm perfectly lonely
I'm perfectly lonely
I'm perfectly lonely
Yeah
Cause I don't belong to anyone
And nobody belongs to me

And this is not to say
There never comes a day
I'll take my chances and start again
And when I look behind
On all my younger times
I have to thank the wrongs
That led me to a love so strong

I'm perfectly lonely
I'm perfectly lonely
I'm perfectly lonely
Yeah
Cause I don't belong to anyone
And nobody belongs to me

That's the way
That's the way
That's the way
That I want it

That's the way
That's the way
That's the way
That I want it

That's the way
That's the way
That's the way
That I want it

That's the way
That's the way
That's the way
That I want it

That's the way
That's the way
That's the way
That I want it

That's the way
That's the way
That's the way
That I want it

That's the way
That's the way
That's the way
That I want it

That's the way
That's the way

That's the way
That I want it

Overall Meaning

In the song Perfectly Lonely, John Mayer sings about his contentment with being alone. He talks about how he once had love but spread it too thin and ended up alone, but he is perfectly okay with that. He reminisces about the times he sees his friends and their significant others, but reassures them that he is perfectly happy being alone with nothing to do and no one to be. Mayer also acknowledges that while there may come a day when he takes his chances and starts again, for now, he is content with his solitary lifestyle.

Still one of my favorite songs to date

@zenidaoctivana3687

Okay John, thanks for reminding me that this masterpiece exists.

@exzisd

When I saw the title I was wondering if it was a new version or a new song. This is an under-appreciated cut. 'Who Says' was definitely my favorite cut from Battle Studies.

Battle Studies was the album that introduced me and made me fall in love with John Mayer. Continuum is a classic amongst classics but this albums holds a special place.

@tiraraa

So am I

@JamesKovacic

That’s funny because I think Battle Studies is probably one of his weaker albums, especially coming off the creative peak that was Continuum. Still has some great songs, though, including this one
