Over and Over -- John Mayer

Baby, you could jump a hundred times
There's just no way that you'll ever fall out of my graces, out of my graces
Let's say for a second that you ever do
And it gets hard to look at you
Time will erase it, time will erase it
You can use me up, kick me down
As much as you like, we're good on time
Cause, guess who desperately wants you, over and over
Over and over
Guess who desperately wants you, over and over
Over and over

You can cut your hair just to grow it back
Or dye it till the sink turns black
I'll recognize you, I'll recognize you

When you lose your way and I'm doing fine
I'll even lose my place in line
I'll help you find it, I'll help you find it

Cause, guess who desperately wants you, over and over
Over and over
Guess who desperately wants you, over and over
Over and over

Fadeout

Cry at the hands of you before I laughed at something new
Cause over and over, I'm breaking my heart just to save your own

Overall Meaning

In "Over and Over," John Mayer professes his unwavering love for his partner, reassuring her that no matter what happens, he will always want her. He starts the song by asserting that there is nothing she could do to make him fall out of love with her. Even if she were to mess up, time would heal any hurt feelings or mistakes. He then goes on to affirm that he is willing to do anything for her, including being used or kicked down, because his love for her is endless. Even when they lose their way or when she changes her appearance, Mayer is confident that he will always recognize her and help her find her way back.

The chorus repeats the phrase "guess who desperately wants you, over and over," emphasizing Mayer's unyielding devotion to his partner. In the bridge, he reveals that he is willing to sacrifice his own heart in order to save hers. The final line, "cause over and over, I'm breaking my heart just to save your own," further emphasizes Mayer's commitment to his love and the lengths he is willing to go for his beloved.

Yeap, that works nice. And I think In F#7 you mean 62. But as someone said, you can also do as he did, tune your guitar a half-step down, and play A - F#m7 - Dmaj9 (x54650)- E7. (And also the Gadd9 (3x5435)

On first chorus and verses after it:
Bm7 instead of Dmaj9
Either 220220 or 7x7779

Not sure if anyone’s interested, but I just tried to pick up the bridge he does here, and I didn’t find easy to get a clear listen, so to me sounds something like this:

Fmaj7 - C/G - Em7 - D\E
Dsus2 (xx0230) Dsus2/C (x30230)

Then:
Am7 (x05500) - G (3x5433)- Em7 (12 x 12 12 0 0) - D/E (12 x 12 11 0 0)
Dsus2 (xx0230) Dsus2/C (x30230)

And third time around E instead of Dsus2/E, and back to A major.

The thing is, I can’t really hear the bass notes, so it could be something different)

Does someone have any thoughts on it?

Hi HowAreYa

So cool to see people finally hear this song cause of Wong notes, really crazy to me that John still remembers this song til this day. Hope it finally gets released sometime soon, probably my favorite unreleased song by him, also listen to ‘Sucker’ and ‘Why did you mess with Forever’ cause they are so good

Hi HowAreYa

@Shaqy Still can’t believe he never released that one, also ‘Everything you’ll ever be’

torduc22

@Marshall Johnson the electric guitar version really does bring out some nuance to the song!

Taking on water >>>>

Marshall Johnson

I would take this song anyway I could get it, but I will say that I prefer the version on Wong notes

John DeBenedetto

I can agree with you! This song competes with stuff like “another kind of green” and “covered in rain”

Mr Scrofulous

This track resurfaced today in a Premier Guitar interview.
He really needs to finish it.
The world needs some love and soothing right now.

Evan

It's so good!

ggthewhale

The fact that he hasn't completed the song for 15+ years means he's either lazy or never wanted to release it to begin with. Or who knows, maybe he wants it to be a posthumous release

Mr Scrofulous

@Dylan M I agree.....sounded much better on electric and also, I think John has become really good at just ripping out content that sounds complete with his experience on TikTok. He has a massive arsenal of licks to pull on.
