and it rocked,
The rhythm of the chair rocking back and forth soothed him and made him feel better.

it made me feel better,
The movement of the chair made him feel more comfortable and less scared.

don't know why but it really doesn't matter,
He doesn't know the reason why the rocking motion was comforting, but the reason isn't important.

that's all I know,
All he knows is that the motion of the chair helped him feel better.

something about the rhythm of it soothed my soul,

that old chevy had brand new shocks,
The shocks on his car were new, so the ride was smooth and comfortable.

Their intimate moment, which was enabled by the car's smooth ride, was enjoyable and memorable.

After graduation I was workin odd jobs, changed a lot of oil in my uncles garage,
After completing his studies, he worked odd jobs, including changing oil in his uncle's garage.

some friend of mine they were startin up a band,
He had a few friends who were beginning to form a musical group.

I would sing for free so I was their man,
He sang for his friends' band at no cost, and so he became one of their bandmates.

we were'nt that good and we seldom got paid,
Their band wasn't very skilled, and they rarely received payment for performances.

but everbody knew when we took the stage,
Despite their lack of talent and payment, their performances were memorable and appreciated by audiences.

and that's a feeling that we never forgot,
The feeling of being appreciated and remembered from their musical performances was never forgotten.
