Besides these two songs, five more of Montgomery's singles have reached the top of the country charts: "I Love the Way You Love Me", "Be My Baby Tonight", "If You've Got Love", "I Can Love You Like That", and "The Little Girl", while thirteen more have reached Top Ten. Montgomery's recordings of "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both released concurrently with R&B versions by the group All-4-One. Montgomery has also released eleven studio albums, counting a Christmas album.
John Michael joined the family band (which also included his brother, Eddie Montgomery, who would later join Troy Gentry in the duo Montgomery Gentry) as guitarist before taking the lead singing role when his parents divorced. Afterwards, he made a frugal living on the local honky-tonk scene as a solo artist playing what he referred to as "working man's country." Eventually, Atlantic Records signed him.

An' when it stops, it's out of my hands
So I could swear forever for all it's worth
Or give you every day I have on Earth
Long as I live
Long as I breathe
With every heartbeat
I won't leave you behind
'Til the Lord says it's time to go with him
I'm yours long as I live
No matter if there's mountains you can't move
Or harder times then you thought you'd go through
And the weight of your world's too much to bear
Just remember I'll always be there
Long as I live
Long as I breathe
With every heartbeat
I'll need you near me
I won't leave you behind
'Til the Lord says it's time to go with him
I'm yours long as I live
The moon and stars aren't mine to give
Neither is eternity
But I'll give you a promise tonight
That I can keep
Long as I live
Long as I breathe
With every heartbeat
I'll need you near me
I won't leave you behind
'Til the Lord says it's time to go with him
I'm yours long as I live
I'm yours long as I live
The lyrics to John Michael Montgomery's "Long as I Live" reveal a deep commitment and love that will last throughout a lifetime. In the opening lines, the singer acknowledges the unstoppable nature of time and the universe. He acknowledges his inability to control the passage of time or the events that may occur within it. Despite this, he is willing to make a promise to love and be faithful to another person for as long as he lives.
Throughout the song, it becomes clear that the person he is speaking to has faced difficult times before, and the singer remains steadfast in his commitment to never leave their side. He promises to be a constant source of support through any challenge that may arise, whether it be mountains that cannot be moved or hardships that seem unbearable.
The chorus repeats the message of commitment and loyalty, reiterating that he will always be there for the person he loves, even if the weight of the world seems too much to bear. In the final lines, he acknowledges that he cannot give them everything, including eternity, but he can offer them a promise that he will keep long as he lives.
Overall, "Long as I Live" is a heartfelt ode to love and commitment that will stand the test of time.

The world's been spinning 'round since time began
Since the beginning of time, the world has been constantly in motion
An' when it stops, it's out of my hands
When the world stops spinning, there's nothing I can do about it
So I could swear forever for all it's worth
I could make a promise that I'll always keep, no matter what
Or give you every day I have on Earth
I could devote my entire life to being with you
No matter if there's mountains you can't move
Even if you face obstacles that seem impossible to overcome
Or harder times then you thought you'd go through
Or if you experience hardships that you never expected
And the weight of your world's too much to bear
And if the burden you carry becomes too heavy to handle
Just remember I'll always be there
Know that I'll be there to support you, no matter what
The moon and stars aren't mine to give
I don't have control over the universe
Neither is eternity
I can't promise to be with you forever
But I'll give you a promise tonight
However, I can promise you something tonight
That I can keep
And that's a promise that I'll always be there for you, as long as I live
Long as I live
As long as I'm alive
Long as I breathe
As long as I'm breathing
With every heartbeat
With every beat of my heart
I'll need you near me
I'll always want you close to me
I won't leave you behind
I won't abandon you
'Til the Lord says it's time to go with him
Until it's time for me to pass away and go to heaven
I'm yours long as I live
I'm committed to you for as long as I'm alive
