The Christmas Song
John Travolta Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey
And some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys
And goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer
Really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said

Many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you.

Overall Meaning

The Christmas season is one of the most special times of the year. It is the season of giving and sharing love, joy, and happiness with loved ones. The joy and happiness of the season are most felt when we imagine the beautiful things that come with it. The opening lines of John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John's song The Christmas Song perfectly encapsulate those feelings of Christmas. The song starts with the image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, creating a cozy and warm feeling. It goes on to evoke memories of the winter season, with the image of Jack Frost nipping at your nose. The mention of Yuletide carols being sung by a choir adds to the excitement and wonder of the season.

The next stanza of the song talks about some of the other things that come with Christmas. It mentions a turkey and some mistletoe, which are key elements in any Christmas celebration. The line about "tiny tots with their eyes all aglow" is especially poignant, as it captures the wonder and awe that children feel during this season. The anticipation of Santa's arrival and the thought of flying reindeer add to the magic of the whole experience.

The song then concludes with a simple yet heartfelt message of "Merry Christmas to you." This message is for everyone, from children to adults, and it reminds us all of the true meaning of the holiday season.

Was it everything you ever hoped and dreamed for? For me, it was worse than the "prep work" I had to undergo for my colonoscopy last year. I'd rather spend 24 hours on a toilet then ever hear this again.
