Just Walking in the Rain
Johnnie Ray and The Four Lads Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just walking in the rain
Getting soaking wet
Torturing my heart by trying to forget

Just walking in the rain
So alone and blue
All because my heart still remembers you
People come to windows
They always stare at me
Shake their heads in sorrow
Saying, who can that fool be

Just walking in the rain
Thinking how we met
Knowing things could change
Somehow I can't forget

(Just walking in the rain)
(Walking in the rain)
(Walking in the rain)
(Just walking in the rain, all day I)

People come to the windows
They always stare at me
Their shaking their heads in sorrow
Saying, who can that fool be
(Now who can he be)

Just walking in the rain
(Walking in the rain)
Thinking how we met
(Walking in the rain)
Knowing things have changed
(Walking in the rain)

Somehow I can't forget
(Walking in the rain)

Overall Meaning

The song "Just Walking in the Rain" by Johnnie Ray is a melancholic ballad that depicts a man walking alone in the rain while reflecting on lost love. The opening lines set the tone for the song as the singer walks in the rain, getting soaking wet, and trying to forget someone who has clearly left a lasting impact on his heart. The rain is used as a metaphor for his teardrops falling from his eyes, which is a common trope in blues music.

Throughout the song, the singer is haunted by memories of his past relationship and is unable to find closure. The loneliness he feels is palpable in the lyrics and is intensified by the fact that people are looking at him with pity as he walks in the rain, making him feel like a fool. The use of the word "torturing" further emphasizes the intensity of his emotions and the pain he is experiencing.

As a teenager way back in the 1950s, Johny Ray, Guy Mitchell and Frankie Laine ruled the hit parade. Still remember all three with much affection. So grateful that material such as this is available via the internet. Thank you so very much. Kind regards to any fans who may be listening to this. July 2022.

I'm so glad I found this gem, plus links to other Johnnie Rae songs. I was 11 in 1956, but this song stuck around for years. I can fully appreciate now how good he was. I spoke to him on the telephone one time as I was a friend of an agent he knew well. Fascinating!

Hello Darlene, How are you doing?

Seeing and hearing Johnny Ray here, I don't think I've ever heard him better. He hits those notes so perfectly. It took me until the age of 80 to realize how good he was.
