1 Corinthians 1
Johnny Cash Lyrics

O Death, where is thy sting?
O Grave, where is they victory?
O Life, you are a shining path
And hope springs eternal, just over the rise
When I see my redeemer beckoning me

Oh row my ship over the waves of your sea
Let me find a safe port now and then
Don't let the dark one in your sanctuary
Until it's time to pack it in

O, row, row my ship
With the fire of your breath
And don't lay a broadside on your ship as yet
Blow ye warm winds
When it's chilly and wet
And don't come to soon yet
For collecting my debt

O Death, where is thy sting?
O Grave, where is they victory?
O Life, you are a shining path
And hope springs eternal, just over the rise
When I see my redeemer beckoning me

Oh let me sail on
With my ship to the East
And keep my eye on the North Star
When the journey is no good for man or for beast
I'll be safe wherever you are

Just let me sail into your harbor of lights
And there and forever to cast out my night
Give me my task
And let me do it right
And do it with all of my might

O Death, where is thy sting?
O Grave, where is they victory?
O Life, you are a shining path

And hope springs eternal, just over the rise
When I see my redeemer beckoning me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Johnny Cash's song, "I Corinthians 15:55," are based on a biblical passage that reflects on the inevitability of death, and the hope of eternal life. In the song, Cash is confronting the idea of his own mortality, asking the questions, "O Death, where is thy sting? O Grave, where is thy victory?" He then turns to the idea of spiritual salvation, describing life as a "shining path," and placing his faith in the hope that comes with redemption.

Cash's lyrics are full of vivid imagery, often using nautical metaphors to describe his journey through life. He speaks of "rowing" his "ship" over the waves of the "sea," and finding a "safe port" in times of trouble. He also addresses the "dark one," likely a reference to the devil or other powerful negative influences, warning against letting them into his "sanctuary."

Ultimately, the message of "I Corinthians 15:55" is one of hope in the face of mortality. Cash's lyrics express a deep faith in a higher power, and an abiding belief in the redemptive power of life. The song is a powerful meditation on the meaning of human existence, and a testament to the enduring legacy of one of the greatest musical artists of our time.

Paul was writing to people who had been in the presence of Jesus, after He died and rose again and after they had sought Him out. It's a personal journey, as personal as our sins, as personal as His love for you and for me, which is sometimes obscured by our selfishness. It's best to first read in the 4 gospels. Gospel translates "good news". Matthew was with Jesus early on. There are moments which Jesus said things that stunned people, really in all of the gospels. Mark is the next gospel, more of Jesus amazing people. Luke wrote the third one and was a physician. Luke didn't meet Jesus before He died on the cross. Luke grasped the timing and fulfillment of Jesus being born and giving His life at age 33. Luke describes the birth of Jesus and is the writer of the Christmas gospel, I guess you could say, but as it has become, Christmas... it's not a biblical idea. The birth of Jesus was a huge deal. The timing happened after centuries of mankind always failing to maintain a relationship with God because of our fallen state and tendency to corruption. We needed a Savior.

The last gospel is often recommended. The gospel of John is written from the perspective of "the disciple whom Jesus loved", not said as if he was the only one Jesus loved, rather John had the love that he sought before Jesus. Maybe John was from a broken home, or had been orphaned or otherwise suffered loss and until he knew Jesus he had significant pain and/or struggles. In the 3rd chapter of John, a Pharisee named Nicodemus came to see Jesus "by night", indicating Nicodemus didn't want the other Pharisees to know about it. 😏 Jesus had identified these religious leaders as "hypocrites" and had addressed them with, "You wicked brood of vipers..." for their indifference to the people they were supposed to care for. So when Nicodemus had a question for Jesus, who He was impressed with, yeah, "by night" was the way to avoid being harassed by the vipers. It is in the 3rd chapter of John that being born again, born of the spirit, comes up. So, not understanding this chapter, Medicine Mann, is reasonable. With this exchange between Nicodemus and Jesus, we can also see a superpower of Jesus to respond without sarcasm when Nicodemus asks a... okay, a stupid question. I can't lessen how stupid it was. I won't be sarcastic with sincere questions, but come on Nicodemus, that was... wow, just...

Okay, back to John chapter 3, after Jesus died and rose from the dead and His followers waited where He had instructed them, in the Upper Room, a new kind of human being emerged from the Upper Room. John, chapter 3, manifested in believers whose spirits were made alive by the Holy Spirit indwelling each believer. The beginning of that chapter explains the first birth and the necessary for eternal life second birth. God's angels, fallen angels and those Genesis 6 angels who got chained early, demons had never seen people like these before. Throughout the book of John statements Jesus made about the functions of the Holy Spirit can be found. Jesus called him the Comforter, for example. It will be the Holy Spirit bringing these words back up to your mind through your memory when your heart is ready, for another example. You and I were thought of before the foundation of the world to have a relationship with God. We were born in God's timing. We are in a time of great deception but every person created in God's image is equipped to find Him and to have access to the truth. So, you may join me in the idea that it's a challenging but exciting time to be here. And we have gifts that God gave us individually in the womb or passed to us generationally. We tend to misuse our gifts for our own glory until we know Jesus and ask for His forgiveness and become born-again. Then the best moments are those when we use our gifts for God's purpose. Abundant life, Jesus called what He came to give us. Just at 40 years of making huge mistakes but finding forgiveness and unwavering love. Jesus is spiritually perceived and therefore will be more real to you than another human being who is perceived with the 5 senses. When Satan, (means "Adversary"), brings to mind our sins, (to sin just means "to miss the mark" and is a neutral term, in that we can mean well and miss the mark), there is a heaviness, he uses labels and harsh accusations. My big brother listened to the point of ending his time here. (Not sure about the algorithms and comment section content). When the Holy Spirit shows us our sinful words, thoughts and actions there is hope and loving authority involved. Jesus is Who He said He is. Satan, the devil, (means "the liar"), is a scumbag fallen archangel lying jerk, whose lies we have all believed at times. No one regrets seeking, finding and accepting the grace, (means "undeserved favor"), love and forgiveness from Jesus that grants us a new birth with the Holy Spirit always with us. Side effects include joy unspeakable and the peace that passes all understanding. Again, it's perfectly understandable that this chapter was mostly enigmatic. One of the aforementioned functions of the Holy Spirit is to "lead you in all truth" - somewhere in John, I think found in chapters 14 - 17. Prayed for you. Everyone is extremely important to God. It's a weird time in human history and for His reasons, here we are. ♥️
