Bird on a Wire
Johnny Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Like a bird on a wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
Like a fish on a hook
Like a knight in some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee

And if I, if I have been unkind
I just hope you will let it go by
And if I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you

Like a baby stillborn
Like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out to me

But I swear by this song
And by all I have done wrong
I'll make it all up to be

I saw a young man leaning on his wooden crutch
He called out to me, "Don't ask for so much"
And a young woman leaning in her darkened door
She cried out to me, "Why not ask for more"

Like a bird on a wire

Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Bird on a Wire” by Johnny Cash are a moving and introspective exploration of the human experience. The song is a reflection on the ways in which we can all feel trapped at times, like birds on a wire or fish on a hook. Despite this, the singer expresses his desire to be free, like a knight in a fairy tale or a baby yet to be born. He acknowledges the pain and struggles he has encountered along the way, tearing down those who attempted to help him. However, despite his imperfections, he pledges to make amends for all he has done wrong and undo the harm he has caused.

As the song progresses, the singer encounters two strangers; a young man leaning on his wooden crutch and a young woman leaning in her darkened door. The young man advises the singer not to ask for too much and the young woman asks why he should not ask for more. Through these encounters, the singer begins to understand that freedom is not simply the absence of constraints, but a matter of perspective. He realizes that there is a balance to be found between striving for more and finding contentment with what he already has.

Overall, “Bird on a Wire” is a powerful song that delves deep into the human experience. The singer’s intimate and intensely personal reflections on his journey through life resonate with listeners on a primal level, reminding us that we are all striving for freedom and meaning in our own ways.

One of the most innovative and original musicians of all time. I know that this a cover by Leonard Cohen, it still carries that brightened, darkness.

I prefer this version, Cohen gets a bit too maudlin for me. Cash strikes a better balance and it’s all the more powerful for that…

Kris Kristofferson told about the time the Highwaymen were doing a show in Europe. In the middle of the show, the electricity went out and they were in the dark. The group huddled off stage trying to figure out what to do. To paraphrase, Johnny Cash said, "Give me an acoustic guitar. Then he went back out on stage alone and sang 'Bird on the Wire.' The audience went crazy." Only Johnny Cash could pull that off in a dimly light concert venue; the Man in Black bringing down the house.
