The Wall
Johnny Cash / June Carter Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a lot of strange men in cell block ten
But the strangest of them all
Was a friend of mine who spent his time
Staring at the wall
Staring at the wall

As he looked at the wall
So strong and tall
You could hear him softly curse
Nobody at all ever climbed that wall
But I'm gonna be the first
I'm gonna be the first

Well, the warden walked by and said son don't try
I'd hate to see you fall
For there is no doubt they'll carry you out
If you ever touch that wall
If you ever touch that wall

Well, a years went by since, that's the truth
Well, a years gone (them mean bastards ain't they?)
Well, a years gone by since he made his try
But I can still recall
How hard he tried and the way he died
But he never made that wall
Never made that wall

Well, there's never been a man ever shook this can
But I knew a man who tried
The newspapers called it a jailbreak plan

But I know it was suicide
I know it was suicide

Overall Meaning

The Wall by Johnny Cash talks about a man that spent his time in prison staring at the wall, a friend of the singer. This man comes up as the strangest among all the men in Cell Block Ten. He curses the wall as no one had ever climbed it. But, he had decided he would be the first to do so. The warden warns the man not to try as he would fall, and they would carry him out if he touches the wall. The following year, the man attempts to escape from prison, but he couldn't climb the wall, and he dies trying. Although the newspapers reported it as a jailbreak plan, the singer insists it was a suicide.

This song talks about the futility of hope and how even the strongest of men can break when incarcerated for too long. The song is a story that tells us how incarceration can break even the strongest of minds. The man who decided to escape knew no one ever managed to do so, but he thought himself better than the others. Thus, the song also tackles the notion of overconfidence, and how often we make decisions that we cannot fulfill. Hence, this song is a powerful reflection of hopelessness, despair, and unattainable wishes.

* The song was a part of Johnny Cash's album Joy to the World that he released in 1971. The album contained songs with various themes ranging from Christmas to patriotism.
* The Wall was written by Harlan Howard, one of the most prominent songwriters of Nashville the Capital of Country Music.
* The song is a cover of country singer Freddie Hart, which he released in 1959.
* The song describes the state of despair one can experience when they see no way out of a hopeless situation.
* The song is Johnny Cash's commentary on the state of the prison system in America.
* The original song was banned from some Southern radio stations, owing to its themes of suicide and prison break.
* The song was played at a couple of Cash's concerts at various prisons, including Folsom State Prison.
* Johnny Cash was not a stranger to prison-themed songs, as he performed at multiple prison shows and recorded his successful live album At Folsom Prison in 1968.
* Although the song tells the story of a man who didn't live to climb the wall, it inspired many prison breaks over the years.
* Cash's interpretation of the song emphasizes the dangers of prison as a system that can break even the strongest of minds.

Cash was an idol to all of the downtrodden regardless of failures, sins, mistakes or flaws. This song perfectly encapsulates that. The recognition of a soul lost and forgotten by the American justice system. Recognize how he in this version there's no mention as to the crime. That's because it doesn't matter. Justice reform needs to happen regardless of how dismissive some may feel about criminals lives.
