In The Morning
Johnny Mathis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the wee small hours of the morning
While the whole wide world is fast asleep
You lie awake thinking of the girl
Never even think of counting sheep

While the whole wide world has learned it's lesson
She'd be yours if only she would call
In the wee small hours of the morning
It's the time I miss her most of all

In the wee small hours of the morning
While the whole wide world is fast asleep
You lie awake thinking of the girl
Never even think of counting sheep

While the whole wide world has learned it's lesson
She'd be yours if only she would call

In the wee small hours of the morning
It's the time I miss her most off all

Overall Meaning

The song "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" by Johnny Mathis describes a person lying awake in the middle of the night, unable to sleep and instead thinking of someone special who is not there. This person longs for a phone call or some form of contact from their love interest, as they believe that if only that person would call, they could be together. The song emphasizes the feeling of missing someone deeply and having the weight of the world on your shoulders as you lay alone, consumed by thoughts of that missing person.

The lyrics paint a picture of an individual lost in their own thoughts, unable to find solace in their surroundings. The opening line sets the scene with a quiet, lonely feeling of the wee small hours of the morning, while the repetition of the lines “While the whole wide world is fast asleep / You lie awake thinking of the girl / Never even think of counting sheep” emphasize the feeling of being alone and consumed with thoughts of the absent loved one. The last two lines echo this sentiment again, highlighting how much the person misses their love interest at this particular time of day.

Overall, "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is a poignant and melancholic portrayal of the sleepless nights spent longing for someone, and the universal feeling of missing someone we want to be close to.

Written by Barry Gibb and sung by the great Vera Lynn, this is a beautiful song and love how Johnny Mathis puts aliveness into the lyrics.which is uplifting to the soul.

My father was the pianist for this album. Memories of listening to, memorising every word, are indelibly etched. Such happiness Johnny brought into our lives!

Johnny is still performing this, at his concerts. I always thought the title was, "In the Morning," but the program we have, from 2006 says, "Morning of My Life." We were celebrating our 52nd anniversary, and I can't believe it has been that long, since we saw him. Don't know what I would do, without "YouTube" and our own collection of his music!

Johnny did a wonderful version of this at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1978. One of my favorite songs of his, Love it! And John, of course!
