In 1957 while still in high school, Tillotson was making records and performing on stage; as a student at the University of Florida, he had his own musical variety show on regional television. Following graduation in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Communications, he signed with Cadence Records and moved to New York City to pursue his music career. In 1960, he recorded his first hit, a composition entitled "Poetry in Motion" (written by Anthony/Kaufman), that went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and #1 on the UK Singles Chart.
A "crossover" artist, several of Tillotson's songs were successful on both the country music charts and pop charts. He earned a Grammy Award nomination for another of his own compositions, "It Keeps Right On a-Hurtin," and also for the song "Heartaches by the Number," nominated for Best Vocal Performance of 1965. He also appeared in the 1963 film "Just for Fun" and sang the theme song for the 1965 Sally Field television comedy "Gidget".
In a career spanning more than 40 years, Tillotson has recorded 26 singles that made it onto Billboard's charts, and performed at venues across the United States and other places around the globe.
He was featured in the 1966 camp comedy The Fat Spy starring Jayne Mansfield, Jack E. Leonard, Phyllis Diller, Brian Donlevy and Jordan Christopher & the Wild Ones. This film was featured in the 2004 documentary The 50 Worst Movies Ever Made (#46).

You've broken my heart and now the tears start to fall
Why should I go on carrying if there's no love at all
You've shattered my dreams and now the heartaches began
We're playing a game of pretend cause there's no love at all
Once I've thought you loved me but look how wrong a man can be
You've broken my heart but someday I'm sure you will find
You'll slowly go out of your mind if there's no love at all
No love and no fun there's not much left of me
Once I've thought you loved me but look how wrong a man can be
You've broken my heart but someday I'm sure you will find
You'll slowly go out of your mind if there's no love at all
The lyrics of Johnny Tillotson's "No Love At All" speak of heartbreak and disappointment in a relationship that lacks love. The singer is devastated by the actions of their partner who has broken their heart by shattering their dreams. The tears that fall are a consequence of the realization that there is no love left in the relationship. The singer is bearing the weight of carrying on with a relationship that has no love or fun, leaving them feeling empty and depleted.
The singer is aware that they have been fooled into thinking that their partner loved them, and that this was not the case. The promise of love and commitment that kept their hopes up was all pretense for a game that their partner was playing. The singer warns their partner that living without true love can drive them insane, and that they will soon feel the effects of living without it.
In the end, the lyrics convey the message of the emotional implications of a relationship that has no love. Heartbreak, disappointment, and emptiness are just some of the consequences that one may experience in such a relationship. The song is a reminder that love is one of the most important ingredients in any relationship, and without it, things can quickly fall apart.
