Ventura and his orchestra, the "Combo Show", added rock and roll elements to the genre in the early 1960s, influenced by the early stars of American rock (including Elvis Presley). His hits include "Patacón pisao", "Pitaste", "El elevador", "La agarradera", "Capullo y Sorrullo", and "El tabaco," and has recorded over 100 albums. He continued to record into the 1990s.
Ventura became involved in politics in 1962, joining the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD). He was Vice Mayor of Santo Domingo under Dr. José Francisco Peña Gómez from 1982 to 1986, and was Mayor from 1998 to 2002.
Capullo Y Sorullo
Johnny Ventura Lyrics

Rubio como la mantequilla
Yo puedo dar mi fe y mi testimonio
Que lo que digo no es ninguna mentirilla.
Del matrimonio nacieron nueve hijos,
Ocho salieron rubiecitos;
The lyrics of Johnny Ventura's song "Capullo y Sorullo" tell the story of a couple from a small town. They were blonde and had nine children, eight of whom were also blonde, but the ninth turned out to be black. The husband had kept the secret for many years, but eventually, it ate him up, and he decided to confess to his wife. The husband was nervous about her reaction but decided to speak to her about it, saying that all the children were precious to him and he loved them equally, but he wanted to talk about the black child. He asked the question a few times - is the black child his? And finally, his wife replied, "Yes, the black child is yours."
The song is a poignant commentary on societal attitudes towards race, sex, and family in the Dominican Republic. It highlights the complexities of racial identity and discrimination, especially in a culture where race is a marker of social status. The song insists on the importance of confronting truth, no matter how painful, to allow for healing and societal growth. It encourages listeners to move beyond their prejudices and accept that everyone is equal regardless of skin color or physical appearance.
