It's good enough for me
What was good enough for my grandpa

Because the world is almost done
Gimme that old fashion morphine

The lyrics to Jolie Holland's song "Old Fashioned Morphine" speak to a desire for an escape from the troubles of the world. The repeated refrain of "Gimme that old fashion morphine" implies a longing for a simpler time or an alternative reality, where the pain and suffering of the current world don't exist. The references to the singer's grandpa and historical figures like Billy Burroughs and Isabelle Eberhardt suggest that this desire for escape is not new - people have always sought ways to cope with the harsh realities of life.
The lines "Sister don't get worried / Because the world is almost done" are intriguing and a bit ominous, as they imply that the end of the world is near. However, the tone of the song remains relatively mellow and almost nostalgic, despite these apocalyptic undertones. It's possible that the singer is suggesting that the end of the world is not something to be feared, but rather a release from the struggles of living.
Overall, "Old Fashioned Morphine" is a haunting meditation on the human desire for escape and the ways in which we cope with the suffering of the world.

Saw this girl many years ago in Asheville NC, she’s so sultry and I’m still listening!

To Michael H. I didn't know about her until a great local jazz station played this New Orleans kind of jazz wake- and though young she was already seasoned. I feel like she was always in my life, silently karmically until I bought her albums! Do you still listen 2 years later? I love her very unique typically Anti Records sound, bless them. They never dig the mundane. This song is kind of too close to me- Namaste

THIS TUNE IS CRUST PUNK APPROVED

Classic & Timeless & Priceless=] Kinda spooky how deep this song is. Thanks ANTI-Records for keeping the INDIE scene alive. Truly "a-musing". I think Jolie was the founder of the dictionary of the dialect of the Californian language. Who is this “Billy Borough’s “ she speaks of?!? Honestly more questions than answers like is “old fashioned morphine “ code for the street drug “horse” and many more=]. I couldn’t think of a more Dadaist vocal artist.

Like all the Anti Artists, a unique presence in what can be a dull "juke box" - however you get your music, do you still listen to the radio? For rock or folk- in my neck of the proverbial woods, if you don't dig jazz or classical ( I DO) or tedious INHO, Rap, rap, tap, tap, gyrate, gyrate, irritate! That's NOT music- it's advertising- how many of this fine lady's had really seen her? Or knew how to pronounce her name! Let alone gazing at her female attributes- as another artist, Lisa Hannigan put it, to a jerk with a cell phone aimed at her "petticoat" "don't! That's the good china". Jolie and Lisa are classy, no there's a to wish for duet...Thank you Ms. Holland for ALL your music and Lisa Hannigan too. And THANK YOU ANTI. You gave the world, a drop of Waits"....Namaste
