I Am Still Running

Before I learned to run
At the kissing tree
Before I learned my guns
We were seventeen
Seventeen years young
I am still running, I am still running
I had no idea
The pain would be this strong
I had no idea
The fight would last this long
In my darkest fears
The rights become the wrong
I am still running, I am still running
Build me a home
Inside your scars
Build me a home
Inside your song
Build me a home
Inside your open arms
The only place I ever will belong
The song "I Am Still Running" by Jon Foreman paints the picture of someone who is running through life, searching for a place of belonging, and finding it in the arms of someone they love. The lyrics are filled with memories of the past, where life was simpler, love was sweet, and pain was not so overwhelming. The opening lines, "You remember me before I learned to run, at the kissing tree before I learned my guns, we were seventeen, seventeen years young," speak to the nostalgia of a time when innocence still existed and love was pure.
As life goes on and the person encounters pain and setbacks in their journey, they come to realize that the fight is not easy and, in fact, it may never end. The lines, "I had no idea the pain would be this strong, I had no idea the fight would last this long, in my darkest fears the rights become the wrong," express the challenges and doubts that come with the journey. However, despite it all, the person is still running, still striving for a better life, and exploring the world to find their place in it.
The song concludes with a plea for a sense of home and belonging, with the lines, "Build me a home inside your scars, build me a home inside your song, build me a home inside your open arms, the only place I ever will belong." This serves as a powerful reminder that true belonging is found in the love and connection we have with others.
Overall, "I Am Still Running" is a deeply introspective and poignant song that speaks to the human struggle to find meaning, belonging, and purpose in life.

I used to dream of being 17 to sing those lines. Now, very much more than 17, I understand why it is "still running" and wonder if I ever ran at all. Thank you for songs that sing true years after years.
