Somebody's Baby
Jon Foreman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She yells, "If you're homeless sure as hell you'd be drunk
Or high or trying to get there or begging for junk
When the people don't want you
They just throw you money for beer"

Her name was November
She went by Autumn or Fall
It was 7 long years since the Autumn when
All of her nightmares grew fingers and
All of her dreams grew a tear

She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl
She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl
And she's somebody's baby still

She screams, "Well if you've never gone it alone
Well then go ahead you better throw the first stone
You got one lonely stoner
Waiting to bring to her knees"

She dreams about heaven, remembering hell
As the nightmare she visits and knows all too well
Every now and again, when she's sober, she brushes her teeth

She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl
She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl
And she's somebody's baby still

Today was her birthday, strangely enough
When the cops found her body at the foot of a bluff
The anonymous caller this morning tipped off the police
They got her ID from her dental remains
The same fillings intact, the same nicotine stains
The birth and the death were both over
With no one to grieve

She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl
She's somebody's baby
Somebody's baby girl

And she's somebody's baby still
She's somebody's baby still

Overall Meaning

The song Somebody's Baby by Jon Foreman paints a vivid picture of a woman named November, who was once somebody's baby, but now finds herself homeless and struggling with addiction. The first stanza highlights the stereotypical view that society has towards homeless people - that they are all either drunk, high or begging for junk. The singer of the song, November, yells in response to this stereotype, asserting that homeless people are not all one-dimensional characters who can be easily dismissed. She makes it clear that these people have stories and struggles that are often overlooked.

The second verse delves deeper into November's past, revealing that she has been struggling for the past seven years with the aftermath of some traumatic event. Her nightmares have grown fingers and her dreams have been replaced with tears. Despite her struggles, November remains defiant, challenging those who have never gone through hardship to throw the first stone. It becomes clear that November sees herself as part of a larger community of people who are often dismissed by society.

The final verse is shocking in its revelation that November has died. It is her birthday, and as the police find her body at the foot of a bluff, the song paints a picture of a woman who was alone and uncared for. The lyrics suggest that November was someone's baby girl, but that she ended up dying with no one to grieve for her. The song ends with a painful reminder that even in death, November is still somebody's baby.

I help women give birth. I see these precious souls take their first breaths. Even the hardest of moms hold their babies with reverence. Whenever I see a homeless man or woman, I wonder who held them? Did mental illness, or drugs, money or all three tear them from their families? Or did they run from abuse? Are they hiding? Every single baby I hold, I pray over: God, mark this baby as your own. Empower their families to stay connected and well. Let your love blossom in the hearts of all who gaze upon this fresh life. Thank you, Lord. Amen”

Bless you for your insight, wisdom and compassion. I became homeless when the apartment complex I had lived in for 12 years was sold to a buyer who raised my rent over $350 more per month! I sang this song with Jon every night before and after losing my home. I am a 57 yr old female with physical limitations (hit by a car) I have been terrified, abused, stripped of every belonging, friends all dead, no family. So I have to search for reasons to live, try to find some little piece of hope to hang on to.. JESUS, Jon and Switchfoot have been that for me. And continue to be every second of the day. Love

@caroline4801

RL Day hey my sister in Christ. How you doing? Hope things are getting better in your life. Will certainly be praying for you. May Jesus fill your heart with His presence every single time of the day. Lots of love 💞

@Caroline Thank you for your kind words and prayer.. The same day you sent me the message I WENT TO SEE SWITCHFOOT AT THE CRYSTALBALL ROOM IN PORTLAND!!! I have been praying for and singing about RESURRECTION and RESTORATION. Someone I used to help when I had my home popped up and asked "what's the name of that band you love so much?" I replied " SWITCHFOOT "and started crying hysterically "they're going to be here next week and I cant be with them cus I dont have the money for a ticket" HALLELUJAH, NEVERTHELESS 🤣 He immediately handed me some money and said, "I know what SWITCHFOOT has meant to you and how their music helps you.. You have to be there!!" After 2 years of struggle and heartache I NEEDED THAT! I almost felt guilty - that I was not worthy - and that was a luxury I had no right to have. MY FATAL FLAW ANATOMY tryed to get the best of me but I RECOGNIZED THE LIAR... and Holy Spirit said to me YOU KEEP FEEDING THAT FIRE!!! YOUR JOY IS YOUR FUEL, MAKE A JOYOUS NOISE TO THE LORD!!! SING AND DANCE IN THE LIGHT AS THE SHADOWS RUN. It is a vital part of my existence- not a luxury. SEEING MY ☄SWITCHFOOT☄ FAMILY AGAIN AND SINGING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS 🎙🎶🎸AND PRAISING 🎵🔔AND BANGING THE DRUMS 🥁WAS LIKE BEING IN HEAVEN 💛💥💛 SO I have been renewed and strengthened... just in time for my next move because I have to leave the place I've been staying warm at NOW and I have no idea where to go.. and I fight fear all the day long. But I know HE WILL ALWAYS BE BY MY SIDE AND HE WON'T LET ME GO because🎀 I'M SOMEBODY'S BABY, 🎀somebody's baby girl. 🎀

Precious!

Thank you Jon Foreman. This song has become a tradition at our annual Homeless Memorial Service. 112 people living on the streets died in Tampa last year, one is far too many.

@vogelhouse3118

One of Jon Foreman's most powerful songs.
