Lord was a member of Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Paice, Ashton & Lord, The Artwoods, and Flowerpot Men. He is recognized for combining rock and classical music.
In 1968, Lord co-founded Deep Purple, the band he was most well-known for. Lord and the drummer, Ian Paice, were the only constant band members for 34 years. He left Deep Purple after their UK tour in 2002, and was replaced with Don Airey.
Lord had been considering leaving the band for some time, due to his busy touring schedule and his Durham Concerto. In 2001, Don Airey was used to substitute him for a month after a knee injury. This worked out, so Lord decided to leave in 2002.
Lord was well-respected for his mastery of the Hammond Organ. Some call him "Lord of the Hammond", and in his 34-year Deep Purple career, you can hear his distinctive solos amid many classic songs on their albums.
In 2011, Lord was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died on 16 July 2012, surrounded by his family at the London Clinic after a pulmonary embolism

here be heroes...
here be sunshine...
here be grey...
here be life...
here love lies bleeding...
memories so hazy...
and dreams that drove me crazy
Here be down...
here be paradise...
here be starbright...
here be pain...
here be smiles in eyes like rainbows...
my father and my mother...
my sisters and my brother
pictured within
Where there're shadows ill met by moonlight...
there are dragons I have slain...
and here be bright eyes with hair so golden...
sunrise and sunset and running free...
and laughing at the rain
Here be home...
here be travellin'...
here be thunder...
here be blue...
and Sometimes heaven and thoughts of wonder...
the Miracle of children...
a poet and a pilgrim
Kith and kin
pictured within
lose and win
pictured within
In the song "Pictured Within" by Jon Lord, the lyrics describe a journey through memories and emotions. The verse "Here be friends... here be heroes... here be sunshine...here be grey... here be life... here love lies bleeding... memories so hazy... and dreams that drove me crazy" seems to represent a reflection on a past filled with both positive and negative experiences. The contrast between light and dark, joy and pain, suggests the complexity of life and the importance of both the good and the bad times.
The following verse begins with "Here be down... here be paradise... here be starbright... here be pain... here be smiles in eyes like rainbows... my father and my mother... my sisters and my brother pictured within." These lyrics reflect a nostalgic look back at family and the relationships and experiences that have shaped one's life. The idea of "pictured within" suggests that even though these people and memories may no longer be physically present, they still exist in the mind and heart of the singer.
The final verse references some of the challenges faced in life, such as shadows and dragons, but then returns to positive experiences like bright eyes and running free. The last few lines of the song - "Here be home... here be travellin'... here be thunder... here be blue... and Sometimes heaven and thoughts of wonder... the Miracle of children... a poet and a pilgrim. Kith and kin pictured within, lose and win pictured within" - seem to bring all of these themes together, representing the journey of life with its ups and downs, joys and sorrows.

It is not "one of" the greatest songs ever performed....this is IT! NEVER will you see such perfection of performance, mood, professionalism, and a song with a theme of our dreams and their ability to reach into the past, into dreams beyond our reality... this is a miracle... This cannot be topped....
