When a Blind Man Cries
Jon Lord Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you're leaving close the door.
I'm not expecting people anymore.
Hear me grieving, I'm lying on the floor.
Whether I'm drunk or dead I really ain't too sure.

I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man and my world is pale.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know there ain't no sadder tale.
Had a friend once in a room,
had a good time but it ended much too soon.
In a cold month in that room
we found a reason for the things we had to do.

I'm a blind man, I'm a blind man, now my room is cold.
When a blind man cries, Lord, you know he feels it from his soul.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jon Lord's "When a Blind Man Cries" tell a poignant story of a man who is in a state of despair, and possibly near death, after losing someone or something very important to him. The opening lines of the song are a plea to whoever might be leaving him to "close the door," as he is not expecting anyone else to come to him. As he lies on the floor, he grieves loudly, and is not quite sure whether he is still alive or dead after drowning his sorrows in alcohol.

As a blind man, his world is already pale, and the loss of this person or thing has made his situation even more tragic. The song suggests that whatever it is that he has lost has left him permanently scarred and unable to cope with his surroundings. He remembers a time when he had a good friend who made him happy, but unfortunately, this friendship did not last long enough, and their good times ended too soon. In a cold month in that room, they found a reason for the things they had to do, suggesting that perhaps they made some decisions that they were not proud of in order to cope with their difficult lives.

"When a Blind Man Cries" is a touching song that deals with themes of loneliness, despair, and loss. The lyrics are deceptively simple, but they pack a powerful emotional punch.

I have cold shivers at how amazing Ian’s vocals still are and have that authentic Ian signature tone to his voice clean as day. A true legendary vocalist.
