McLaughlin was born on September 27, 1982 in Anderson, Indiana. Playing piano since early childhood, he was always finding ways to get out of piano lessons. While attending Highland High School, he shattered both wrists in an accident that interrupted his musical education. Nevertheless, McLaughlin attended Anderson University to study music. He released an independent album entitled Up until Now in 2003. This quickly led to McLaughlin becoming the first artist to sign on with the school's record label, Orangehaus Records. His self-titled album was released in 2004 to local and regional praise. He began touring, travelling throughout the U.S. Midwest, and working up a grassroots following.
He released Indiana in 2007, preceded earlier in the same year by the EP Industry, also known as Jon McL. In 2008, McLaughlin returned with lead single "Beating My Heart" from his album OK Now released in the same year. He gained fame with his cameo appearance in Disney's Enchanted. Released in early September 2011 in the U.S. Forever If Ever was McLaughlin's third major-label release. 2012's lead single "Summer Is Over" featured fellow singer-songwriter-pianist Sara Bareilles from Promising Promises which was a slightly reworked version of his 2011 album. There were no other singles released from the album. Jon released Holding My Breath on his website and iTunes on September 24, 2013. The mp3 version of the album is also available at Amazon.

And don't make a noise
What she hears she kills
And those little glances, she gives them out all day
So don't waste your chances and just let her walk away
She's gonna walk all over you
Your jaw's just gonna drop like the others do
It hurts when I think back
To the first time I saw her eyes
The memory used to be a friend of mine
But now she's in another town, probably
Got the other boys running around
And she'll bless them with the same curse
Falling in love so fast it hurts
Falling in love so fast it hurts
Hey girls, you better hide your men
It's not just her looks and her curls
It's what she does with them
Don't look now but here she comes
Rolling your name right off her tongue
She stares at you as she talks
You try to listen but you really just watch
The way she's gonna walk all over you
Your jaw's just gonna drop like
The others, the others do
And you're falling in love so fast,
It hurts when I think back
To the first time I saw her eyes
The memory used to be a friend of mine
But now she's in another town, probably
Got the other boys running around
And she'll bless them with the same curse
Falling in love so fast it hurts
Falling in love so fast
Oh, there's nothing you can do
She'll take your dreams and your nightmares
And they'll both come true
You're on a long, long list of fools
And baby in the end, when she's got your heart again
You won't even know how she does it
All you know is you freaking love it
Falling in love so fast,
It hurts when I think back
To the first time I saw her eyes
The memory used to be a friend of mine
But now she's in another town, probably
Got the other boys running around
And she'll bless them with the same curse
Falling in love so fast it hurts
Falling in love so fast it hurts
I'm falling in love so fast it hurts
The lyrics to Jon McLaughlin's song Falling describe the power that a particular woman has over men. The song opens with a warning to boys that they should be careful around her because of how she can easily ensnare them. She is described as having many suitors, so boys should not waste their chances to be with her. Despite this warning, the singer admits that he fell for her quickly and deeply, and the pain of remembering her and her power over him still hurts.
The second verse shifts the perspective to the girls who must watch out for their men around this woman. Again, the lyrics warn that it's not just her physical appearance but what she does with it that makes her dangerous. She can make men feel special with just a glance or a word, and they will fall under her spell just like the singer did. The chorus then repeats the idea that falling in love with this woman is painful, yet irresistible.
The final verse offers a bleak outlook for anyone who falls for her trap. It suggests that she will take everything from them, but they will love it regardless. The idea of being on a long list of fools suggests that there have been many before willing to offer up their hearts to her. Ultimately, the song portrays the allure and danger of falling for someone who is not good for you.
