McLaughlin was born on September 27, 1982 in Anderson, Indiana. Playing piano since early childhood, he was always finding ways to get out of piano lessons. While attending Highland High School, he shattered both wrists in an accident that interrupted his musical education. Nevertheless, McLaughlin attended Anderson University to study music. He released an independent album entitled Up until Now in 2003. This quickly led to McLaughlin becoming the first artist to sign on with the school's record label, Orangehaus Records. His self-titled album was released in 2004 to local and regional praise. He began touring, travelling throughout the U.S. Midwest, and working up a grassroots following.
He released Indiana in 2007, preceded earlier in the same year by the EP Industry, also known as Jon McL. In 2008, McLaughlin returned with lead single "Beating My Heart" from his album OK Now released in the same year. He gained fame with his cameo appearance in Disney's Enchanted. Released in early September 2011 in the U.S. Forever If Ever was McLaughlin's third major-label release. 2012's lead single "Summer Is Over" featured fellow singer-songwriter-pianist Sara Bareilles from Promising Promises which was a slightly reworked version of his 2011 album. There were no other singles released from the album. Jon released Holding My Breath on his website and iTunes on September 24, 2013. The mp3 version of the album is also available at Amazon.
Places I Already Know

now when I was asked for mine
There was something in your talk,
That a makes me wanna walk.
And Signs
are all but separate
the life that could be made
and I started to see, that you were talking amoung the
conversation
I might have some trouble with the expectations I made
when I wasn't afraid of expectations
So don't throw me to places that I already know, I've
already been,
I've already told myslef to forget.
oh oh oh don't throw me to places that I already know,
I've already been
I've already to myself to forget
now if you could show me around, the end
It just to keep me awake
and all these plans were fake
our success was just a mistake
and you're gonna pay for what you take
I was up all night
only the broken heart in sight
not just a wanna hear the line
sure enough, you're mine
So don't throw me to places that I already know, I've
already been,
I've already told myslef to forget.
oh oh oh don't throw me to places that I already know,
I've already been
I've already to myself to forget
now if you could show me around, the end
Oh, I wanted you to be
Please, be the one only me
oh I wanted you to be
Oh please please
oh I wanted you to be
Please the one only me
and oh, I wanted you to be
oh please stay
now I already know
it's not gonna stop
just hated to love
giving my heart and a
baby just a dont throw me to places
that I already know
I've already been and I've already told myself to forget
now if you could show me around, the end
The lyrics to Jon McLaughlin's song "Places I Already Know" convey a sense of emotional vulnerability and caution towards new relationships. The singer recognizes the signs and signals of a potentially significant relationship, but is hesitant to fully commit due to past experiences and expectations. The repetition of the phrase "don't throw me to places that I already know" emphasizes this fear of being hurt again and forced back into familiar emotional territory. However, despite this hesitancy, the singer still longs for a deeper connection with the other person, as evidenced by the repeated pleas for them to "be the one only me." Ultimately, the singer seems resigned to the fact that love can be painful, but still desires to explore the potential of this new relationship ("now if you could show me around, the end").
The lyrics also touch on themes of deception and betrayal, with the lines "all these plans were fake" and "our success was just a mistake." It suggests that the singer has been hurt in the past by someone who presented themselves as something they weren't, leading to a deep-seated sense of distrust towards new romantic prospects. This distrust is further emphasized by the line "you're gonna pay for what you take," suggesting a fear of being taken advantage of emotionally.
Overall, the lyrics to "Places I Already Know" express a nuanced range of emotions related to love and trust, highlighting the delicate balance between vulnerability and self-preservation in relationships.
