Downtown
Jon and Lynn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could be just one neon sign away
You could be sipping on tonic and Tanqueray
For all I know you could be staring at your phone
Like I'm staring at the clock on the wall
Just two empty glasses hoping for the same last call

Are you somewhere in a bar downtown
Thinking about me baby, drinking about me baby
Am I heavy on your heart right now
Like you are on mine, wishing we could rewind just a little
Laughing at the strangers
When they ask you your sign or your name
While your turning them down 'cause you're thinking about
You and me and you wondering if I'm hanging around
Somewhere in a bar downtown

Are you watching that door
Like I been watching that door all night
Are you acting like I'm acting
Just acting like it's all alright
Are you goin' to different places
Just trying to find my face somewhere in every crowd
Or have you come to the conclusion that this over us illusion
Just ain't working out

Are you somewhere in a bar downtown
Thinking about me baby, drinking about me baby
Am I heavy on your heart right now
Like you are on mine, wishing we could rewind just a little
Laughing at the strangers
When they ask you your sign or your name
While you're turning them down cause you're thinking about
You and me and you wondering if I'm hanging around
Somewhere in a bar downtown

For all I know you could be staring at your phone
Like I'm staring at the clock on the wall
Just two empty glasses hoping for the same last call

Are you somewhere in a bar downtown
Thinking about me baby, drinking about me baby
Am I heavy on your heart right now
Like you are on mine, wishing we could rewind just a little
Laughing at the strangers
When they ask you your sign or your name
While you're turning them down cause you're thinking about
You and me and you wondering if I'm hanging around
Somewhere in a bar downtown

Yeah, oh, oh, oh yeah
Yeah ah

Yeah I'm somewhere in a bar
Somewhere in a bar downtown

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jon and Lynn's song "Downtown" explore the thoughts and emotions of two individuals who are separated but still yearning for each other. The song begins by acknowledging the possibility that they are just one neon sign away from being together. The singer wonders if the other person is present in a bar downtown, perhaps sipping on a drink and thinking about them, just as the singer is fixated on the clock on the wall. Both individuals are depicted as having empty glasses and hoping for the same last call, implying a desire for a chance to reconnect.

The lyrics then delve into the internal dialogues of both individuals. The singer wonders if the other person is watching the door just like they have been all night. They question whether the other person is pretending that everything is alright, and if they are searching for the singer's face in every crowd. The song also hints at the possibility that the illusion of their relationship might not be working out, suggesting a sense of uncertainty and potential separation.

Throughout the chorus, the singer continues to question the other person's thoughts and feelings. They wonder if they are heavy on the other person's heart, just as the other person weighs on their own heart. The lyrics suggest a desire to rewind time and revisit their connection, while acknowledging that both individuals are stuck in a state of longing and contemplation.

Overall, "Downtown" portrays the bittersweet emotions of being apart from someone you deeply care about, while still hold on to the hope of being together again.

Jon Lynn
