War Paint
Jonah Marais Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

when the daylight's gone
she puts her war paint on
she takes no prisoners, you will be missing her
when night time turns to dawn
and when the moonlight comes
that's when she starts to run
she'll catch you standing still
when she comes in for the kill
she don't need no gun
undercover, camouflage
secrets, lies, and sabotage
never even saw her face, leaving with the entourage
she's got her war paint on
so she's alone again
says its self defense
i'll never let it hurt cause i always hurt them first
you know its common sense
undercover, camouflage
secrets, lies, and sabotage
never even saw her face, leaving with the entourage
i don't wanna change your life, if i can take ya home tonight
maybe we could slow it down, faster than the speed of light
faster than the speed of light
she learned her lesson well
don't go all natural
and never let them see the beauty underneath
just keep it to yourself
she's got a heart of glass
behind a make-up mask
i want to take it off and make the aching stop
set her free at last
i don't wanna change your life, but if i could take you home tonight
maybe we could slow it down, faster than the speed of light
faster than the speed of light
she's lookin for a friend
she said, "that's not the way this ends."
but give me one more night til the morning light
and we can just pretend
undercover, camouflage
secrets, lies, and sabotage
never even saw her face, leaving with the entourage
i don't wanna change your life, but if i could take ya home tonight
maybe we could slow it down, faster than the speed of light

so take your war paint off
yeah take your war paint off

Overall Meaning

The song "War Paint" by Jonah Marais is about a girl who puts on her "war paint" at night, becoming a different person and leaving her vulnerable side hidden. She takes no prisoners and catches anyone standing still when she comes in for the kill. However, she also wants to be set free from her facade and wants someone to see the beauty underneath her make-up mask. The lyrics suggest that the girl had been hurt before and now keeps her guard up, but is also looking for someone to slow down with and be her genuine self around.

The opening lyrics of "when the daylight's gone she puts her war paint on" sets the scene for the rest of the song, depicting a girl who transforms at night. The chorus of "undercover, camouflage, secrets, lies, and sabotage" brings a sense of danger and stealth to the story, as the girl seems to be hiding something about herself. The line "never even saw her face, leaving with the entourage" reinforces the idea that the girl doesn't want to be seen for who she truly is.

The final verse shows the singer's desire to see the girl's vulnerable side and sets up the ending of the song where the girl is urged to "take your war paint off." The song is ultimately about learning to let go of past traumas and being comfortable with being vulnerable in front of others.

It is currently the 10th June 2019, Jonah Marais is in a world famous band, and currently going on a world tour, selling out arenas and I couldn't be more proud. Even out of all the WDW songs, this is so my favourite and it deserves so much more appreciation. Jonah Marais has come so far and I wanted to let him know that this song helped me to take my war paint off❤️
