Shadow
Jonathan Clay Lyrics

I fall

In the dark

I wish I was

There with you
And you

You're probably sleeping

I wish I was

Sleeping too

Next to you

Wherever you are

I wish you'd fall

Back into my arms

You

Wherever you are

You know that we

We can't be that far

Can't be that far

You and me

We can't be that far

And I

I left the whole room

Just the way

It used to be

With the pictures plastered

Higher than the ceiling

Trying to keep the feeling alive

By trapping it inside

You

Wherever you are

I wish you'd fall

Back into my arms

You

Wherever you are

You know that we

We can't be that far

Cant be that far

You and me

We cant be that far

Cuz your shadow is haunting me

And your shadow is all I see

Your shadow is haunting me

Why won't you

Let me be

Cuz I'll never have you

Wherever you are

I wish you'd fall

Back into my arms

You wherever you are

I wish you'd fall

Back into my arms

Cuz we

We can't be that far

Away

Overall Meaning

In Jonathan Clay's song Shadow, the singer is expressing his longing for someone who is not physically present with him. He falls into darkness and wishes he was with this person, who is probably sleeping. He wishes he could be sleeping too, next to them. He repeats the phrase "wherever you are" as a way of acknowledging that they are not together but he still wants to be close to them. He imagines this person falling back into his arms and he left the whole room the way it used to be so that he can keep the feeling of being with this person alive. But despite all of this, he knows that he cannot have them and their shadow haunts him because it's all he can see. He ultimately acknowledges that they can't be that far away from each other.

The lyrics of the song Shadow evoke feelings of longing and loneliness. The repetition of the phrase "wherever you are" highlights the distance between the singer and the person he desires. The imagery of the pictures being plastered higher than the ceiling suggests that he is holding onto something that no longer exists which ultimately leads to his own pain. The song beautifully captures the feeling of being in love with someone who is not accessible to you.
