hide and seek
Jones Howard Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Nothing at all, just a distant hum
There was a being and he lived on his own
He had no one to talk to, and nothing to do
He drew up the plans,
learnt to work with his hands
A million years passed by and his work was done
And his words were these...
Hope you find it in everything,
everything that you see
Hope you find it in everything,
everything that you see
Hope you find it, hope you find it
Hope you find me in you
So she had built her elaborate home
With it's ups and it's downs,
its rains and its sun
She decided that her work was done,
time to have fun
and she found a game to play
Then as part of the game
She completely forgot where she'd hidden herself
And she spent the rest of her time
Trying to find the parts
Hope you find it in everything,
everything that you see
Hope you find it in everything,
everything that you see
Hope you find it, hope you find it
Hope you find me in you
There was a time when there was nothing at all, nothing at all
Just a distant hum
Jones Howard's "Hide and Seek" is a song that explores the themes of creation, purpose, and self-discovery. The first verse describes a time when there was nothing but a distant hum, and a being who had no one to talk to and nothing to do. This being drew up plans and spent a million years working on a project, the fruits of which were articulated in the phrase, "Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see / Hope you find it, hope you find it / Hope you find me in you."
The second verse introduces a female character who has also built something elaborate, but has forgotten where she's hidden herself. In this way, the song suggests that creation is not enough on its own; to find one's purpose, one has to actively engage in the world and seek out new experiences. This is reinforced in the chorus, which repeats the phrase "Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see / Hope you find it, hope you find it / Hope you find me in you."
Overall, "Hide and Seek" is a song about the importance of actively searching for meaning and purpose in life, rather than simply existing. It stresses the importance of engaging with the outside world and discovering who you are through experience.

Howard Jones was a giant of the eighties. His synthesiser expertise was obvious. The songs that went with them hauntingly brilliant. Hide and seek was my fave being a twenty year old at that time. I salute you SIR for your contribution to the eighties scene. If I get a reply that would be the icing on the cake.
