The Man Who Sold the World
Jordis Unga Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We passed upon the stairs,
We spoke of was and when
Although I wasnt there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes -- I thought you died alone
A long long time ago
Oh no, not me,
We never lost control,
Youre face to face,
With the man who sold the world

I laughed and shook his hand,
I made my way back home,
I searched for form and land,
Years and years I roamed,
I gazed a gazely stare,
We walked a million hills -- I must have died alone,
A long long time ago.

Who knows, not me,
I never lost control,

Youre face, to face,
With the man who sold the world.

Overall Meaning

Jordis Unga's version of The Man Who Sold The World is a cover of the 1970 David Bowie song of the same name. The lyrics are cryptic and enigmatic, containing several possible meanings. The verses suggest a conversation between the singer and a man who sold the world. When they met, the singer was shocked to find that the person he thought was dead long ago was still alive. The phrase "we never lost control" implies that the singer and the man who sold the world were able to maintain their composure and control despite the situation they were in.

The man who sold the world is a metaphor for a person who had a profound impact on the world, but whose efforts went unrecognized. Bowie's version of the song, interestingly, was not very popular when it first came out, but Nirvana's recorded a live version that brought the song to the forefront of the popular music scene.

The song has undergone several cover versions, most notably by Lulu, who hit the top 10 UK chart in 1974 with her version, and by the band Midge Ure in 1993. The song has also been covered by several other artists, including Lorde in 2013.

The contract was for one album/tour, not for band membership.

They would have dumped her like they did JD because they don't like sharing fame and fortune.

And they made a fortune from rockstar and the tour just after.

Jordis is better off without them

God even 14 years later I still think about this girl. I was only 9 when this show came out and I was rooting for her the WHOLE time. I think they made a huge mistake

Agreed

@kevinpower9237

Still gives me goosebumps.

@mandy42086

Same. Except I wasn't 9 lol

@anjalander3217

When they said you have to go I cried, I sat there and I cried, she was one of the best singers. But when they let JD win, crushed. It's the fact that they chose him that makes everything worse.

I'll never forget this moment...She dedicated this to a good friend who'd died from an overdose. That gave the song a depth I'd never perceived it had. It was her friend's favorite song.

@julientrez9262

It was dedicated to Bryan Ottoson from American Head Charge. Her boyfriend at the time was the other guitar player of AHC.
