Genesis
Jorma Kaukonen with Tom Hobson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time has come for us to pause
And think of livin' as it was
Into the future we must cross, must cross
I'd like to go with you
I'd like to go with you

You say I'm harder than a wall
A marble shaft about to fall
I love you dearer than them all
Them all, so let me stay with you
So let me stay with you

And as we walked into the day
Skies of blue had turned to gray
I might have not been clear to say, to say
I never looked away
I never looked away

And though I'm feelin' you inside
My life is rollin' with the tide
I'd like to see it be an open ride
Along with you, goin' along with you

The time we borrowed from ourselves
Can't stay within a vaulted well
And livin' turns into a lender's will
So let me come with you
And let me come with you

And when we came out into view
And there I found myself with you

When breathin' felt like somethin' new, new
Along with you, goin' along with you

Overall Meaning

Dear Jorma Kaukonen,
I am writing to interpret the lyrics of Tom Hobson's song "Genesis" for you. The song talks about the need for us to stop and reflect on the past and present as we move into the future. The first paragraph talks about the need for us to pause and reflect on our lives. The second paragraph speaks of the singer's love for the person he is singing to and how he wants to stay with them. As they walk into the day, the singer says he never looked away from them, which could mean that he was always present and attentive.

The third paragraph speaks of the uncertainty in life, but the singer wants to go on an adventure with the person he is singing to. The time they have on earth is borrowed from themselves and cannot be locked away in a vaulted well. Life is like a lender's will, and they must go along with it. When they come out into view, the singer feels like he is breathing something new, which could mean that being with this person makes him feel alive and renewed.

The best Jorma-Airplane song ever. I never get tired of listening to this song and I've been listening to it for 47 years. Just a perfect song.

I bought the Quah vinyl LP at the beginning of 1975, just after it was released. So many of the tracks, (especially on the CD re-issue with some bonus songs are game-changers, with Jorma Kaukonen's distinctive vocals and guitar work, (along with Tom Hobson.) in
