Light My Fire
Jose Feliciano/Minnie Ripperton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you, yeah
Girl, we couldn't get much higher

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

The time for hesitation is through
There's no time to wallow in the mire
Darling we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Well, you know that it would be untrue
And you know that I would be a liar
If I was to go and tell you
Mama we couldn't get much higher

Well, come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire, yeah
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

Yeah, come on baby light, would you light my fire, yeah
Come on baby light my fire, would you, oh it's alright
Light my fire, light my fire, light my fire

Light my fire, light my fire, light my fire
Girl, you better light my fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jose Feliciano's "Light my Fire" is a deep and meaningful experience for the audience. The lyrics is about the intensity and passion within a love story. The opening line, "You know that it would be untrue, You know that I would be a liar" suggests there is an implication of dishonesty that is to be addressed when making love. The singer demands honesty from his partner, and he is letting them know that the passion he feels for them is sincere. The following line is, "If I was to say to you, yeah, Girl, we couldn't get much higher," where the singers ignite sexual activity through his words. It inspires the woman to be confident in her sexuality and encourages her to take the lead.

Towards the end, the line "Come on baby, light my fire" is repeated multiple times. It shows persistence and his longing for the lady to fulfill his sexual needs. The urgency in his voice is evidence of the desire for this woman. The storyline of the song is similar to "passionate love" that just takes off in a burst, and the two lovers can't get enough of each other. Jose is pleading with his lover and is explicit with his intentions. His tone and tempo of the song create an atmosphere of passion, romance, and desire.

If there's a heaven, I hope she knows how much joy and happiness she is giving to me.

Yesssss. Agreed

I feel the same way about Minnie Riperton. There's an episode of "Unsung" to confirm that she didn't get more recognition by the music industry. She grew up in Chicago about the same time as the Hutchinson sisters (The Emotions) and Yvette Stevens (Chaka Khan). I don't think these women get the recognition they deserve. The Emotions were featured in an episode of "Unsung" also. And Chaka Khan is so powerful that she doesn't care what shallow people think. I think it's a shame that this video has so few views and comments.

She wasn't.
Her songs are not pop enough. All of them are in the right place as they don't belong to sung-by-everyone type.
