Stille Nacht
Joseph Mohr & Franz Gruber Lyrics

Alles schläft, einsam wacht nur das traute hochheilige Paar
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh'
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh'
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
Hirten erst kund gemacht
Christ der Retter ist da
Christ der Retter ist da
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht lieb aus Deinem Göttlichen Mund
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'
Christ in Deiner Geburt
Christ in Deiner Geburt
The lyrics of "Stille Nacht" (Silent Night) by Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber convey a serene and holy atmosphere associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. The first verse sets the scene of a quiet night, where everything is asleep except for the intimate and sacred couple, referring to Mary and Joseph. The mention of the "Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar" (Gentle boy with curly hair) is a direct reference to the baby Jesus. The lyrics suggest that the child should sleep peacefully in heavenly rest, emphasizing the tranquility and sanctity of the moment.
The second verse introduces the shepherds, who were the first to be informed of the birth by angels, as depicted in the biblical story. The lyrics allude to the joyful proclamation of the angels through the phrase "Durch der Engel Halleluja tönt es laut von fern und nah" (Through angels, hallelujah resounds far and near). This line expresses the idea that the birth of Christ brought a message of hope and salvation that resonated throughout the world. The repetition of "Christ der Retter ist da" (Christ the Savior is here) emphasizes the significance and impact of Jesus' arrival on Earth.
In the third verse, the lyrics turn to the divine nature of Jesus. The description of "Gottes Sohn" (Son of God) highlights the unique and special nature of Christ. The phrase "o wie lacht lieb aus Deinem Göttlichen Mund" (oh how lovely, dear, from your divine mouth) suggests that Jesus brings joy and love through his divine words and actions. The lyrics also evoke a sense of anticipation and relief with the line "Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'" (Here strikes the saving hour). This line signifies that the birth of Christ marks the moment of salvation for humanity, emphasizing the redemptive aspect of Jesus' birth.
The final line reiterates the presence of Christ in his birth, stating "Christ in Deiner Geburt" (Christ in your birth). This emphasizes that Jesus' birth is not just a historical event but a spiritual reality, where the divine and human meet. The repetition of "Christ" in the song's final lines reinforces the focus on the central figure of Christianity and his significance in the world.
Overall, the lyrics of "Stille Nacht" serve to capture the atmosphere of the nativity scene, emphasizing the peace, joy, and divine nature associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. It conveys a message of hope and salvation, calling to mind the significance of Christ's coming into the world.

The music for Silent Night was written 203 years ago by Mohr and Gruber. It later became the Christmas Hymn that stopped a War for 3 days. World War I, I believe.

Hmm, that is partly true... there was an informal truce in the WW1 trenches on the first Christmas day, and soldiers from both sides exchanged gifts and played football in no-mans-land. Letters from the soldiers who were there told of singing carols, but it was ' O Come All Ye Faithful' they remembered singing. Strangely enough, Silent Night wasn't known in Britain until the 1960s. O Come All Ye Faithful was well known in both languages and even in Latin ! But it's a good, heartwarming story whichever carol it was.
