And then the weatherman said to go back to bed,
The singer is advised to stay indoors by the weatherman due to the forceful winds outside.

because it's shame to go outside when the wind keeps howling now.
The weatherman suggests that it's unwise to venture outside due to the loud sound and force of the howling winds.

So for a little while there I lived inside a cave,
The singer lived in a confined space or closed environment for some time.

and there were bears and bugs and leaves and love
The artist's experience inside the cave was filled with various emotions including fear (bears), insects (bugs), nature (leaves), and affection (love).

and a dark that only left you when the night came crawling home.
The darkness found in the cave was only dispelled when nightfall came upon them.

And I was happy there for a while until I woke one day to find the roof had blown away
The singer was content in the cave until the roof was blown away unexpectedly.

and the wind blew through me,
The forceful wind passed through the singer's body.

and then the very next day it began to rain
The following day, it started to rain.

and it rained right through me.
The heavy rain felt as though it was coming through the artist's body.

And then the lightning struck right beside my head
Lightning struck in close proximity to the artist's head.

and a branch fell down and came to rest upon my broken legs,
A branch from a nearby tree fell and landed on the singer's limbs which were already damaged or injured.

and to my surprise that bough began to grow.
The branch that fell on the artist's legs started to grow suddenly.

And then the weatherman said to look at the sunset
The weatherman now suggests that the singer should observe the sunset.

and if the sky was red the very next day it would be dry instead,
The weatherman implies that if the sunset has a red hue, the next day will be dry rather than rainy.

and I was happy in the sun like a lazy one,
The singer relished in the sunlight and felt relaxed or lethargic as a result.

And then that broken bough it began to grow,
Continuing from earlier, the broken branch became larger and stronger.

and it grew right through me.
The bough had grown through and out of the artist's body.

And then the very next day,
The following day.

well the grass did blade and it cut right through me.
The sharp blades of grass cut through the singer's body when they came into contact with it.

And then a rabbit dug a tunnel right between my ribs, and she lived right through me.
A rabbit made a tunnel which passed right through the artist's ribs, and the rabbit lived inside it.

And then a bird came and pecked at the space in my chest
A bird came and started to peck at the cavity in the artist's chest.

and then he flew right through me.
The bird flew straight through the artist's body.

Now there's a hole in the ground where I used to lay down and I can't fill it in.
There is now an empty hole where the singer used to rest, and they are unable to fill it in.

And there's a colouring pad in the back of my head and I want to fill you in.
The artist wants to share their thoughts and feelings (their internal coloring pad) with the listener.

And I was nothing more than an impression of myself and I want to fill you in.
The singer's identity was reduced to a mere impression or copy of themselves, and they desire to impart their true feelings and emotions to the listener.

Yeah you could lay your' body in the hollow where I used to be and you could fill me in.
The listener can fill the empty space where the singer used to be by physically occupying it and conversing with the singer.

And then the very next day I believed in something new well, what can I say?
The next day, the singer gained newfound belief or perspective on life, and they are unsure how to explain it.

I'm a man, I'm a man like I used to be,
The artist is a man and claims they have returned to their former selves.

cos there's hole in my chest where the animals lived and I want to fill you in.
The artist wants to share their innermost feelings with the listener which they believe was previously inhabited by animals.

And I do a very fine impression of myself
The singer can give off an impression that they are putting on a facade of themselves.

and I want to fill you in cos there's a colouring pad in the back of my head and I want to fill you in.
Reiterating an earlier sentiment, the singer wants to convey their true feelings and thoughts to the listener using the metaphor of color from their mind's eye.
