I Never
Joshua Hedley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We never were in love
There were never stars above
On the night when I never said I do
You never broke my heart
And I never fell apart
And I never shed a tear for you

It's not hard to realize when you look into my eyes
That the truth is this is how I make it through
You never wore my ring
And you never meant a thing
And I never shed a tear for you

If I really loved you so, well then everyone would know
That inside this is tearing me in two
You never broke my pride

And I never died inside
And I never shed a tear for you

Overall Meaning

In Joshua Hedley's song "I Never," the singer explains that they were never truly in love with their partner, despite never expressing this to them outright. The lyrics reveal that there were no romantic gestures, such as stars above, and no exchange of wedding vows. The singer claims that their heart was never broken and they never shed a tear over their relationship. They suggest that the relationship was never real and that they were simply pretending to be in love, while never actually feeling the emotional attachment that others often do.

The singer goes on to explain that it's not difficult to see that they were never in love when looking into their eyes. They suggest that they are only going through the motions to make it through the relationship, without actually feeling any kind of love or attachment. The mention of the ring represents the lack of commitment in the relationship and serves as a metaphor for how empty the relationship is. The singer implies that if they truly loved their partner, it would be evident to everyone around them, but they claim that this is not the case.

It seems in so much of today's "country" music they think if you sing in a winie voice it's country. They need to learn from this guy!

I woke up in the middle of the night at my motel room and saw Joshua on the TV cause I left it on. He was doing some interview and they showed this video. I'm not a fan of country music but I couldn't stop watching the video. Though it's not my go to type of music, I really appreciate your sound and your talent. I hope you the best with your music!

My mom played people like Patsy Cline and Hank Williams all the time when I was growing up; I wish she was still around to hear Joshua - she'd be over the moon happy!
