Swing
Josiah and the Bonnevilles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I looked over Jordan and what did I see?
Comin' for to carry me home
There was a band of angels, a-comin' after me

Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home

I'm sometimes up, and I'm sometimes down
Comin' for to carry me home
But but I know my soul is heavenly bound
Comin' for to carry me home

Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
If you get there before I do
Comin' for to carry me home
Tell all my friends that I'm a-comin' too

Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot
Comin' for to carry me home
Swing low, sweet chariot

Comin' for to carry me home
And now they're comin' for to carry me home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" by Josiah and the Bonnevilles are a spiritual song that is rooted in black American history. It speaks about the hope for the afterlife and the desire to be carried away by angels when it's time to leave this world. The song draws inspiration from the story of Prophet Elijah's ascension into heaven after being carried by a chariot of fire.

The opening lines, "I looked over Jordan and what did I see? Coming' for to carry me home. There was a band of angels, a-comin' after me" speak about crossing the Jordan River, which is a Biblical reference when the Israelites were crossing to the Promised Land. The mention of the "band of angels" is a reference to the belief that angels would come to carry believers to heaven.

The chorus, "Swing low, sweet Chariot, Comin' for to carry me home" repeats throughout the song acting as a call to the angels to come and carry the singer home. The verses mention the ups and downs of life, but the belief that the soul is destined for heaven is unflinching. The last verse emphasizes the hope of reuniting with loved ones in the afterlife.

In conclusion, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is a powerful statement of faith and hope in the promise of an eternal life with the Lord. It has become a significant part of African American history and slave culture, with its message of freedom from this world's troubles and the hope of life everlasting.

I’ve always felt this song was the best I’ve ever heard to describe those vicious fights we can get into with those we love. Its incredible in its ability to narrow in on that affection we can have for someone while we say or do things to hurt them, and vice versa.

@AfterCoffeeWithJess

This was my favorite of all of your music videos, Josiah! Gorgeous camerawork

Josiah is the greatest artist to ever come out of American Idol, at least to me. He’s a sweetheart too and appreciative of all his fans. We’re the same age (11 days apart) but I still see him as that kid that blew me away with his talent singing Grace Kelly. “One Last Song” and “Angels Undercover” are two of my favorite songs of all time. Those lyrics! He’s a wunderkind and this folksy genre suits him perfectly too. Love the new album.

You think you got the best of me
You think you left me hurt
But I've been had much better
And I've been left much worse

Love the lyrics Josiah!
