Starting with her captivating debut, 2006’s ‘Mercury’, and continuing two years later with her intimately personal second album ‘Leyland’, Field has straddled the barrier between popularity and critical acclaim; as at ease playing support for UK Adult Contemporary artist James Blunt as singing her songs in small, hip clubs throughout the country; as adept at songs that climb up radio charts as enticing those music fans with a liking for music that’s defiantly outside the mainstream.
Much of this has to do with Field’s sonic versatility: her singer-songwriter roots are undeniably in folk, but multiple genres inhabit each of her two albums, with rock, country and even jazz making itself felt on songs like radio hits ‘Every Now And Then’ and ‘10 Years’ (off ‘Mercury) and ‘Hey Man’ and ‘Law Of Attraction’ (off ‘Leyland’). And, as she prepares to record her third album mid-2010, Field hints at the expansive Gospel and electronica that is likely to suffuse the new material to be recorded with longtime producer, Kevin Leicher.
Field is the first to admit being a solo woman singer-songwriter in a musical landscape littered with straight-up commercial acts hasn’t been easy – but it’s never stopped the critical acclaim that has come from multiple nominations including two nods at the 15th Annual MTN South African Music Awards in 2009 (one in the fiercely competitive and highly-coveted Best Female Artist category), and a recent nomination in the 2010 MK Awards for her video for ‘Law of Attraction’.
Field’s also planning on upping the ante on her songs, her career and especially her live show in 2010, demonstrating yet again the ballsy, focused and infectious belief in her talent. So alongside her solo shows or the duo performances with Leicher, Field will elevate her already critically acclaimed band performances as she heads into the year. She’s also eager to expand her musical boundaries by more collaborative work, be it with a choir or another artist capable of meeting her match.
It all makes for a fully-formed and powerful package - suitable for an artist like Field who may have her roots in South Africa but is perfectly poised to move onto the world stage.

Pop Song
Josie Field Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But I'm not a pop star
Though I'd love to think I was
I'm so threatened by
The girl in the poster
But I know her show's over
And I'm playing here tonight
Sure, I'd like to be congratulated
And sure, I'd like to be everybody's best friend
But I gotta accept the fact, that I lack in areas that other people crack
But I know that I should
Be honest to myself more than one
And be myself a little more often
Be honest to myself more than once
And be myself a little more often
When I'm old and grey
I wanna look back and say that
That was really me (Really me)
And how beautifully me
Sure, I'd like to be congratulated
And sure I'd like to be everybody's best friend
But I gotta accept the fact ,that I lack in areas that other people crack
But I know that I should
Be honest to myself more than one
And be myself a little more often
And be honest to myself more than once
And be myself a little more often
Be honest when I know I could lie
Be myself when I'm feeling shy
And be honest because it's much easier
To be myself instead of trying to be her
Be honest
And be myself (Be myself)
Be honest (Be honest)
And be myself (Be myself)
Be honest to myself more than once
And be myself a little more often
And be honest to myself more than once
And be myself a little more often

But I'm not a pop star (Pop star, pop star)
Though I love to think I was
Josie Field's "Pop Song" is a song that reflects on the struggle of being oneself in a world where pop culture is ubiquitous. The song is about the false notion of being a pop star and the insecurity that comes with it. Throughout the song, Josie expresses her desire to be true to who she is and to be honest with herself.
The first stanza of the song highlights the false notion of being a pop star. Josie admits that the song sounds like a pop song, but she's not a pop star. She admits to being threatened by the girl in the poster, but knows that her show's over and she has a gig to play. The second stanza reveals Josie's innermost desire to be accepted and congratulated, but she realizes that she lacks in certain areas that other people can crack. She emphasizes the importance of being honest with oneself and being true to who one is.
The bridge of the song reiterates the importance of being honest with oneself. Josie acknowledges that it would be much easier to be herself than to try to be someone else, and that being honest is much easier than lying. She encourages herself to be honest and to be true to who she is.
Overall, "Pop Song" is a powerful commentary on the false standards of pop culture and the importance of being true to oneself.
