LINE OF FIRE
Journey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was a hot and steamy night,
Then Frankie pulled his gun in sight.
He said, "Now Suzi, don't you lie.
Did Stevie, did he catch you with another guy?"
Standing in the line of fire it's gonna shoot ya.
Standing in the line of fire it's comin' to ya,
It's goin' through ya.
He told her that he had been true,
And that he'd never made her blue, no.
So don't go sayin' Stevie's a liar,
Girl, I've got my finder on a hair-trigger wire.

Standing in the line of fire it's gonna shoot ya.
Standing in the line of fire it's comin' to ya,
It's goin' through ya.
Bye, bye, bye, Suzi.
So long girl.

Those gunshots echoed through the town.
Oh Frankie threw his shotgun down.
That roof had moonlight shinin' through.
She said she'd never, never, never, make him blue, yea.

Standing in the line of fire it's gonna shoot ya.
Standing in the line of fire it's comin' to ya,
Standing in the line of fire it's gonna shoot ya.
It's goin' through ya.

Bye, bye, bye, Suzi.
So long.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Journey's song "Line of Fire" tell the story of a heated argument between a man named Frankie and his girlfriend Suzi. Frankie pulls out a gun and accuses Suzi of cheating on him with their mutual friend, Stevie. The chorus repeats the warning that standing in the line of fire will result in being shot and that the bullet will go through you. Despite Suzi's protestations of innocence, the situation escalates until Frankie fires his gun. In the end, Suzi reassures Frankie that she loves him and would never cheat on him.

The song uses the metaphor of standing in the line of fire to represent the danger and consequences of a relationship that has gone wrong. Frankie and Suzi's argument becomes a battle where they are both standing in the line of fire and in danger of being hurt. Ultimately, Frankie's jealousy and suspicion lead to violence, showing how unhealthy relationships can lead to destructive behavior.

Ist concert I ever went to of Journey-Billy Squire opened for them-A day at the beach, and a night of unbelievable music-To this day I am still blown away by what I witnessed with my friend that beautiful night in Ventura, CA-After the 1980 Departure Tour, Keyboardist and Vocalist Gregg Rolie decided to leave the band. Jonathan Cain, the keyboardist for the band, "The Baby's", joined the band and they set out on the Pre-Escape Tour. California was the first place the band played to an audience with the new line-up. I saw the band for the first time on June 7, 1981 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, California. They played 5 songs from the unreleased "Escape" Album! The Escape Tour really kicked off in Osaka, Japan on July 27, 1981 at Festival Hall. The 1981 Escape Tour ended on December 22, 1981 in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Blaisdell Arena.

Here is the playlist from that night-

I think on that night in Houston in 1981, Journey was absolutely the best f*ing rock band in the world. Steve was beyond amazing and effortless, and Neil was/is a blazing melodist almost without equal. The whole band is just on fire. You don't even have to be a fan to see that. Incredible time for music.

@christhornton4410

For me this is Journey at their peak. Steve wailing, Steve Smith and Ross Valory made a killer rhythm section and Neil is killing it. Awesome band

@leemuncy

steve smith and ross must have done too much of something to try and pull what they did on Schon.
this was their peak for certain.

@damonreynolds6775

That they were. But these and other 80s clips are bittersweet, smh to think just a short 6 years later the Perry era just...ended (for all the reasons we know now).
Greatly respect phase two, and all the great talent that it brought, esp Arnel. But this right here, this was the height.

@kevinblackburn3198

And Joanarhan Cain wrote their most memorable songs.

@jumpinjojo

*Neal, not Neil.

I read somewhere that Steve Perry was on the track team when he was in school - junior high or high school, something like that. Anyway, I wonder if that taught him about breathing techniques and breath control. Either that, or he's superhuman to be able to run around the stage, hold those notes, and stay on pitch. AMAZING!!!

@itguru2037

He’s actually superhuman. One in a billon with a B

@lisajoye5721

Not sure about track, but he is definitely a force of nature. 🔥☄
