Interzone
Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I walked through the city limits
(Someone talked me in to try and do it)
Attracted by some force within it
(Had to close my eyes to get close to it)
Around a corner where a prophet lay
(Saw the place where she'd had a room to stay)
A wire fence where the children played
(Saw the bed where the body lay)

And I was looking for a friend of mine
(And I had no time to waste)
Yeah, looking for some friends of mine

The cars screeched, hear the sound on dust
(Heard a noise just a car outside)
Metallic blue turned red with rust
(Pulled in close by the building's side)
In a group all forgotten youth
(Had to think, collect my senses now)
Are turned on to a knife-edged view
(Find some places where my friends don't know)

And I was looking for a friend of mine
(And I had no time to waste)
Yeah, looking for some friends of mine

Down the dark streets (getting darker now)
The houses looked the same (faces look the same)
I walked 'round and 'round (stomach torn apart)
They nailed me to a tree (had to think again)
Trying to find a clue (trying to move away)
Trying to find a way to get out (had to move away and keep out)

Four twelve windows, ten in a row
(Behind a wall where a room to go)
The light shined like a neon show
(See the deep mellow warmth of the glow)
No place to stop, no place to go
(No time to lose, had to keep on going)
I guess they died some time ago
(I guess they died some time ago)

And I was looking for a friend of mine

(And I had no time to waste)
Yeah, looking for some friends of mine

Overall Meaning

The song Interzone by Joy Division is an impressive musing on the struggles of the inner city life. The lyricist finds himself wandering aimlessly through the dark, drab streets, in search of a friend or perhaps just some company to help him pass the time. The city is described as all-encompassing, a place that draws him in and refuses to let go, and he's overwhelmed by the intensity of his surroundings. He comes across a prophet who seems to have died in her room and is haunted by the sight of the bed where her body lay. He continues his wanderings even as the night grows darker and the streets become more treacherous. He eventually comes across a group of youths who are "turned on to a knife-edged view," which seems to hint at the seedier side of city life that he's been trying to avoid.

The striking opening line "I walked through the city limits, someone talked me to try and do it" appears to be an encouragement from a friend to explore the city. The song mentions the abandoned youth, building walls, and fences, creating a sense of entrapment and helplessness. The lyricist is seeking out his friend and finding himself lost in the process - confused by the neon lights, the endless rows of tenement buildings, and the dead prophet's bed. In essence, the song is a reflection on the human condition, where connection and companionship are essential, but the city can make those factors impossible. The sense of isolation and alienation conveyed in the lyrics is compounded by the brooding, dark atmosphere created by the music.

Even if someone just filmed a piece of broken glass for 2 or 3 minutes in black and white it would have more meaning and joy division vibe than this.

@ABSINTHEUR42

I read in the news today that Ian Curtis's grave has been vandalised, but now I'm not convinced the damage wasn't in fact caused by him turning vigorously in it.

@Steve_ATL

This video was made for the people who bought an Unknown Pleasures t-shirt having no idea who Joy Division is.

Finally, someone captured what my imagination was picturing when I first heard this track back in 79.
"Wonder woman fights Wolverine, and then steals a slice of pizza".
It's like you READ MY MIND

Nothing like a loving sense of sarcasm to explain something
