She is remembered for her roles in the original stage and screen versions of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals South Pacific as Bloody Mary and Flower Drum Song as Auntie Liang.
Born in Keyport, New Jersey, Hall received classical training at Juilliard School. In the early 1930s she was a special soloist and assistant director for the Hall Johnson Choir. A leading black Broadway performer in her day, she was personally chosen by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II to perform the roles she played in the musicals South Pacific and Flower Drum Song, as a Pacific Islander and a Chinese-American, respectively. In 1950, she became the first African-American to win a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Bloody Mary in South Pacific. She also starred in the 1954 Broadway musical House of Flowers.
In 1958 she reprised Bloody Mary in the film version of South Pacific, for which her singing part was dubbed, at Richard Rodgers's request, by Muriel Smith who had played the role in the London production.
Hall married actor Clement Hall while in her teens. He died in the 1920s, and they had no children. Hall, a diabetic, died from complications of her illness in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York.

This is such a charming song !

I never understood why Richard Rodgers insisted she be dubbed in this after she had done the role on Broadway.
@megakevin49
Supposedly, the director thought her voice had "frayed" and would not record well, but she toured with the Flower Drum Song stage version for several years after

She was dubbed in South Pacific for good reason. Her voice had lost its power when the film was made - but she was the one and only Bloody Mary, and in that role, nobody could touch her. Still can't frankly. But Rogers and Hammerstein had seen Muriel Smith in the London production, who was not only a terrific singer, but talented at dubbing for other actors who couldn't sing. It was a match made in heaven, because at no time do you feel that the singing voice in the film of South Pacific belongs to someone else - the match is that good. Smith had the vocal power that was needed for the big screen, and Hall owned the role.

Did you read the note with the clip? No reason to dub her.
