how i spent my summer
Julia Brown Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
its dark; it will stay dark all day
and i will move your clothes
from one side of the bed to the other
i will stay in your bed all day
whatever it takes
taking valium, the first snow of the year
walking between two corners of the same room
the same time every week
i will stay in your bed all day
whatever it takes
taking valium, the first snow of the year
(driving down winters lane in the summers, pending all winter at your house)
Julia Brown's song "how i spent my summer" is filled with melancholy, nostalgia, and hints of loneliness. The opening lines of the song suggest a sense of longing for someone who may not be there, as the singer looks at clothes in the light, but it stays dark all day. The act of moving clothes from one side of the bed to the other hints at a futile attempt to fill a void, to create the illusion of someone there. The repetition of the line "I will stay in your bed all day, whatever it takes" emphasizes the singer's desperation to hold onto something or someone, even if it's just a physical space.
The mention of valium and the first snow of the year add to the somber tone of the lyrics. It's a common trope in music to use drugs or substance abuse as a way of coping with emotional pain or a sense of loss, and it's possible that the singer's use of valium is tied to these themes. The imagery of "walking between two corners of the same room" creates a sense of metaphorical confinement, perhaps suggesting the singer's inability to move on from something.
The final line of the lyrics - "driving down winters lane in the summers, pending all winter at your house" - adds an interesting twist to the song. It suggests that the singer is looking back on a particular summer and all the time they spent with someone, perhaps a lost love, but also hints at a sense of timelessness. The act of driving down winters lane in the summers and spending all winter at someone's house suggests a kind of cyclical existence, where time and seasons blend into one.
