Julian Bach is a 28 year old singer songwriter from Somerset West, South Africa.
He lived most of his early years in Strand, a coastal town not too far from Cape Town. It was there and then—affected and afflicted by a number of unrelated and almost random influences like The Beatles, Nirvana and NOFX — that he first succumbed to the rush of writing his own song.
There used to be an old beach café right by the ocean. Inside, kids of all creeds would gather and enthusiastically appreciate their favourite local noisemakers. It was here that Julian cut his teeth, so to speak, in the first of many bands: Sourdough.
A lot has changed for him since those days in the quaint suburbs, but the core of it remains the same: to make music for the sake of making music. His debut solo album, Man On The Bicycle, harks back to the simplicity of youth and is punctuated by moments of nostalgia and wistfulness that only growing up can incite.
From its opening track, Ride—with its rolling choruses and sing-along melodies—to the outlandishly eerie waltz, Ode To No One—right up until the closing track, the honest and anthemic Pirates On A Dead Sea—Julian’s new music captures a quality of songwriting entirely unique to him, but somehow still manages to sound familiar.
Just Because

It doesn't matter where it falls
It leaves a hole
Underneath the fabric of my soul
I sense it when I'm all alone
I meditate it on why this darkness has its way
On me every day
'Cause it feels like I'm losing all my mind
In the dream I had, the dreamer never dies
In all the energy we hold
There's a flame burning cold
While it's looking for a reason
Just because
Hiding from this heart of mine
I've been walking all this time on a field
Through the fog
But then I hear
The cries of an eagle above
Oh, a sign of love
Oh, it feels like I'm losing all my mind
In the dream I had, the dreamer never dies
I was holding on, but I never realised
That some may rise
And some may fall
That some may rise
And some may fall
That some may rise
That some may rise again
That some may rise again
It feels like I'm losing all my mind
In the dream I had, the dreamer never dies
I was holding on 'cause I never realised
That the energy we hold
Is a flame burning cold
While it's looking for a reason
Just because
The lyrics of "Just Because" by Julian Bach is an introspective and contemplative piece that talks about the impact of fear on oneself. The song compares fear to a cannonball, stating that it doesn't matter where it falls, it leaves a hole underneath the fabric of the soul. The artist reflects on his own experience of feeling the weight of fear every day, even in solitude. He tries to meditate on the source of the darkness that surrounds him with the hope of finding a reason why he is feeling this way.
The song further describes a dream where the dreamer never dies, representing the eternal hope and faith that some things never truly end. The artist realizes that while some may rise and some may fall, everyone has the capacity to rise again. The final lines of the song suggest that the energy we hold is a flame that burns cold, looking for a reason, just because. This could be interpreted as the artist recognizing that even when one doesn't have a reason for carrying on, they hold onto hope and the will to persevere just because it's there.
