Romance
Juliette Gréco Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Fuimos matando a la vida
Que echó a correr despavorida,
Llorando llegó la suerte.
Desde la noche bajó el notario
Con tres sables de silencio,
Y se ha dormido el amor
A fuerza de tanta luna
Desgranada en la cabeza,
La niña llora una estrella
Que huye y resbala en la artesa.
The lyrics of "Romance" by Juliette Gréco are in Spanish, and it speaks about the consequences that come with the obsessive quest for immortality. The opening lines, "De tanto darle vida a la muerte, fuimos matando a la vida," roughly translate to 'by constantly giving life to death, we ended up killing life'. These lines suggest that by persistently seeking to evade our own mortality, we've killed the joy and vibrancy of our lives.
The verse about the notary coming down from the night with three silencing swords represents the mystical powers of death, which claims all men and women regardless of their status. The line "y se ha dormido el amor, de cada sutil momento" (and love slept from every subtle moment) metaphorically suggests that when one is too preoccupied with thoughts of death, there's no time or room left for love and living in the present.
The last verse of the song speaks about a girl who is distraught and weeping over the loss of a star, a symbol of hope and inspiration. This last verse offers a glimmer of hope though - it hints that even in death, there's still light to be found, and hope to hold onto.

C’est mon chargé de romance
Dans un matin qui sourit
C’est un amour qui commence
Dans le printemps de Paris.
Paris qui n’est à personne
Est à toi si tu le veux.
Mon ami je te le donne
Ce cadeau c’est pour nous deux.
C’est mon chargé de romance
Dans un matin qui sourit
C’est un amour qui commence
Dans le printemps de Paris.
Les amoureux se promènent
Ils se regardent ravis:
« Mon amour c’est toi que j’aime
Ce bonheur c’est pour la vie. »
C’est mon chargé de romance
Dans un matin qui sourit
C’est un amour qui commence
Dans le printemps de Paris.
